Eastbay Custom Glove Questions, Doc?

Postby JoeBraga » December 13th, 2008, 2:00 pm

I PM'ed doc about this, but I never heard a response. I figure he is busy and that other people might be able to help me out anyways.

I am a senior in college with only one year of competitive baseball left to play. I figured what better way to top it off than with a new glove.

I am considering ordering a custom from Eastbay, and I have some questions. If I understand correctly, if you contact Doc on these forums he is able to do some custom things that aren't offered to the general public. Here are my questions:

1) Is it possible to get the glove in brown/tan leather? If so, what type of tan are we talking about here? Is the very dark, oiled tanned? Or is it lighter color, such as the color of many of Don Morton's Horween gloves? Does anyone have an Eastbay custom in brown that they can take a picture of?

2) Is it possible to get a meshed back now, or at any point in the future? I know that Rawlings is releasing their meshed back line sometime in the Spring, but that might be a little to late for me... [EDIT] To clarify I am talking about a Eastbay Custom with mesh backing, not retail. Sorry if that was confusing.

3) Is it possible to add a wingtip?

4) This was talked about in another thread, but just to clarify, doc can ditch the rectangular Rawlings logo on wrist for a large oval one (similar to Tim Lincecum if I am not mistaken.)

Thanks for your input guys.

1. Not yet. From next year, most probably.
2. It's gotta be a very special request, I don't think so. Doc's shop has little to do with anything that happens to retail gloves. EDIT: It takes months just to add a new color of leather from the same manufacturer. I imagine it'd take at least 1-2 yrs to introduce new material from new manufacturer (due to all the testing required). And I haven't heard it'd be in the plans.
3. I don't think so.
4. If he says so probably.
Sorry I couldn't help much in this post, but my next post could be interesting for you.
Where did you read about logo replacement?

Here's the useful info I could gather in this forum about eastbay custom rawlings ballgloves. I planned to open a thread about it and keep it updated so anyone interested can find that's been said in one place. Now this thread is started, it'll do just as well.

Leather
"I personally feel this is what you will be seeing on ebay in 25 years like the ones you see now." (docglove)
The camel is a lot like the color of the Pro Preferred but not so bright and shinny. It is a Horween real HOH with the color tanned into the leather and not painted as the Pro Preffered. It can run to shades depending on each hide but still nice.
The black is also Horween.
Considering adding your own padding, the camel is nice and soft, the black is harder. (Palm pad was in plan, but no padding is available at the moment.)
The leather is oiled, but it's not like you think its just a Horween developed oil added very lightly in the pocket. It improves the feel.

Back
Regardless of what the pictures show, any glove under 12" is open back, the only 12" open back pattern is the Pro 1000. All the others are fastback.

Lining
The lining color is to be black on all gloves.

Changes by doc:
I don't blame you brother it has been a major undertaking trying to start up the American line, again a couple of issues you raised were changes I made, the poped up area was a change to prevent the tearing you see on so many of that fold over crotch area, I also see all returns and thats a big issue. The 3 holes on the thumb and little are to make it easier to get your thumb in the glove, big hands tended to bump into the bottom lace in the pad. Those laces were only put in gloves to stablize the pad until the glove was built around it.We will get better. but the leather is already the best out there, no one has ever matched that not even us with import HOH. Keep checking on us hopefully you will see us get better. But you will see these gloves still there for a long time to come.

about leather from horween:
wow bs were you at Horween on my last visit? you are pretty much on, we control my camel lether with the oil and toggling but the other ways you mention are used with leather also. When you talk with Skip Horween he will tell you that of all the leather he tans the top 8% is able to be used for gloves. Another bit of trivia: when I started the hides were from the western steers they were probably at least 4 years old very tough and brands every where. To day they are from feed lots probably not much more than one year old I don't think you can here reproduce the stuff Mantle and the boys wore, these steers are have not lived the outdoor life to toughen up.

Docglove, I was wondering when the tan color will be introduced you'll be talking to eastbay anyhow, could you make them add the pattern selection (that is available for each size and web) to the ordering page? It's very confusing and restricting at the moment.

Request to eastbay custom rawlings ballglove owners: please post
* links to images of your gloves
* the weight of your glove (also size and web if you don't have any pictures)

Thank you!

Doc, what is the best way of contacting you? I would like to order a glove ASAP but you are not responding to any of my PMs.
