Just curious, what is the benefit of having metal eyelets in a baseball glove?

I've had good luck avoiding the crotch tear...this old Mantle XPG 6 I picked up has it pretty bad though. If I get it fixed...some new laces and a lanolin bath we might have a keepah :roll:
