There's a good thread about these gloves on softballfans. A boardmember went ahead and ordered one and is supposed to be submitting a review with pictures any day now.

Yes, the gloves use a synthetic leather. I met with Scott Carpenter a couple of years ago to talk about his gloves. He's the real deal. Doc can elaborate, but Scott is a former Ivy Leaguer who wanted to learn how to design gloves. He got a job as a janitor at the Rawlings glove factory and watched the glove designers whenever he could. Then he went home to his apartment and tried to duplicate what he saw. Eventually, he taught himself how to make gloves and the rest is history.

Noting that MLB players were turning to all synthetic backs on their gloves for better performance, he decided to go all synthetic. His gloves are really solid and super lightweight. I haven't had him make me one yet, but I do plan on it.

He has some really innovative ideas too. I have a video somewhere of him showing me this special material that was really thin, but would deaden the ball upon impact. He was experimenting with putting it in the palm of the glove to keep the ball from bouncing out. If I can find it, I'll post it here.

Real original thinker, and very passionate - this guy is one to watch.

Here's a problem ... MLB Rules 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, etc., stipulate that gloves shall be made of leather. I would assume that the synthetic backing on some professional model gloves is allowed because the ball is caught in the leather palm of the glove, thereby not affecting the catch. However, synthetic cushioning that deadens the impact of the ball and its subsequent tendency to rebound would probably not be allowed.

Interesting. I know people who have real crises of conscience when having to purchase leather.


But I'll tell ya right now, oldreliable is sticking with the leather.

MLB Rules 1.12, 1.14 also state the glove should not be larger than 12".

Maybe the leather rule is a joke too.

i dont know just looking at the gloves they dont realy look alive. they dont have that leather type of want. They are plain with no style. not my cup of tea. i will stick to leather.

Loving all of this. I'm all for innovated ideas and pushing technological advances to gloves. Baseball is really traditional but has made some advances in recent years with its equipment. Hope Rawlings and other big companies could counter. They all have made there contributions here and there but it seems they haven't pushed the potential. I think there is a lot of room for technological advances for ball gloves and this guy sure has the right mind frame.

I need to see more of the product obviously but I like the ideas.
