Shooting Star Revitalized at Wilson...briefly

Postby softball66 » August 24th, 2008, 5:01 pm

So what was going through the minds of the marketing people at Wilson in 1976 and 1977 with these gloves? The players, Darrell Evans and Fred Lynn are almost as intriguing players (and who's names are on these gloves) as the gloves themselves.
Wilson decided to restore the famous "Shooting Star" Logo seen on its earliest A2000s and these are well made gloves, probably very workable for high schools and maybe some college players. No quite of A2000 quality and maybe Ansonia leather, but very acceptable fielding tools.
When I first saw the Lynn, in virtually mint condition, I thought, "what a handsome glove and the best possible glove you could get for one with Lynn's name on it. Though the Evans isn't nearly in as good a condition it is still a very well made glove.
And Wilson didn't put personal model on these gloves as many of the makers did for their creme de creme top liners, instead it has stamped "Designed For the Professional," under the signatures.
Many thought Lynn would make the Hall of Fame after being named rookie of the year and MVP in 1975. He wound up coming up short of the 2000 hit club and managed 300 homers for his career, winning four gold gloves, in eight all star games.
Evans, though not the fair haired boy that Lynn projected at a young age, did climb to 2000 hits and 400 homers for his lifetime totals.
I'm sure most here remember the very nice Wilson A2004 and 2005 Catfish Hunter models of this same time frame. Beginning in 1975, these Lynn and Evans models had disappeared from the line by 1979.

Softball66, I picked up the very same Darrell Evans glove on Saturday. It is a very nice mildly used glove. This one is identical to yours except on the back at the base of the web is stamped "second". Now don't burst my bubble, I want to think that "second" means that my glove was the second one of its kind made. :D

I really liked that George Brett 2220, and had it on my watch list, just to see how high it would go. I was surprised there was only one bid. I thought the shooting star Wilsons commanded a little more attention and a bit more cash than that.

I picked up a Pro Model Fieldmaster on ebay a few months ago, and it is a very well made glove with great leather, generic, non-endorsed, but a great glove for a game of catch, nonetheless. My only complaint is that the great leather of the glove is negatively contrasted with vinyl piping and trim. There is a pucker in the vinyl just above my index finger with my finger in the glove, or just below it if I put my finger outside the glvoe. Either way it is a little irritating.

I saw a really nice Glen Beckert Shooting Star on ebay several months ago and managed not to win it, dang it ... :x It had a really interesting web: kind of a dual hinge with triangular cutouts. It looked really nice!

My guess is that the Shooting Star Pro Models were a nice intermediate level glove, for the serious summer leage and high school baseball players in the 1970's, as you mentioned, Joe. Those are two beautiful examples of some pretty good gloves, if you ask me!
Yes, I still have my first glove.

I have an absolutely beautiful Fred Lynn A2220 with the shooting star logo. This one is nicely broken in and to me is every bit as nice as any A2000 that I've seen or owned.

The only thing that held me back on the Brett glove was the velcro closure--I just can't stand velcro on a ball glove
