Different leather codes...horween.... gutman....tenn....

I know there are the codes for the different kinds of leather ( 01 horween, 14 gutman, 09 tenn. ) I was just curious what the differences were, and if they were noticeable even? Is there one that people seek out more than the rest , or is it more of a personal preference ?
