Rawlings Primo?

There has been little discussion about the Rawlings Primo Line. Have any of you spent time using any of the Rawlings Primo gloves? If so, what were your impresssions?

I have done some research and read lots of reviews and this is the most common statements I hear:

#1 ) Glove has amazing craftsmanship and feel on hand

#2 ) Glove is noticeably heavier than your typical rawlings HOH gloves

In the big leagues I have really only seen pitchers wearing them in games

I'm sure other guys on here will be able to add some other stuff regarding the primo's

To my knowledge, the PRIMO's are not even used in the PRO's. Guys like Peavy, Haren, Zito use a PRIMO colored HOH. You can tell by the Gold Glove Co patches on all of their gloves. To my knowledge, the stock of leather for the PRIMO leather is much less than the other stuff so there would not be enough to stock a retail line + Pro Players.

Personally, I dont like the Primo. I think its too much money for a glove that is not as light and functional as a HOH or PP.

Oh good point, I forgot that all the newer HOH's are that same burgundy, that's what threw me off

There is not enough stock of PRIMO leather for the retail line + Pro Players. Really?

Rawlings has docglov personally breaking-in ARod’s gloves but they will not spare 4 square feet of Primo leather when a pro asks for it. Hard to believe.

My brother bought a Primo a couple months ago, and although I haven't played with it, I didn't think it was heavy. Actually, it reminded me more a vintage leather feel - sturdy and well built. If I was was going to buy a new glove, the Primo would be the route I would take.

I have 2 - one that is mine (a PRM 1125) and one that I am breaking in for my son (a PRM 1150T). I do not play competitive baseball - my baseball is limited to assistant to the assistant coach and equipment manager for my son's teams (hey, at least I get to throw with the kid from time to time...).

My observations:

- they are beautifully crafted gloves and the PRM 1125 may be one of the best designed infielder's gloves I have ever put on
- while they may be a little heavier, it certainly hasn't impacted my play (or that of my son when he uses his)
- but (and this is a big "but"), I am a little concerned about longevity (they break in more like a Pro Preferred than a Horween HOH - does that mean that they are throw-away gloves after 2 years of hard play?)

I bought both on ebay for under $250 so I feel as if I got good deals - at $400 retail I'm not so sure they are worth the money.

$400 for a glove that is made with leather that is so thin that it must be backed like $20 pigskin gloves.

I have the mod-trap and its the nicest glove I have ever used. I love the longer laces and it was a quick break in. I think it is a little heavier but it weights about he same as a Nokona 175 walnut. I have only used it pitching and once or twice at short but the is no glove on the market today nicer. I have owed every hoh and wilson and they don't compare. I think the Ak2 wilson series are garbage and the only glove I would put to it are the Nokona buffalo series. I think it will hold up if it is cared for. I would also suggest a black pro preferred. They are much nicer than the camel or other strange colored ones because they show less wear. I have used a black 11.5 mod trap from Don Morton's for two years and it in perfect shape, it all about caring what you pay for

the only glove I would put to it are the Nokona buffalo series.

Makes me feel very good about having my Nokona buffalo glove.

I wonder if the black pro preferred's wear better than the camel? All I know is my camel one showed EVERYTHING, and the performance of it wasn't all that great either, I have seen some nice black pro pref's though, just never had a chance to use one

That is what I was told from another member who orders from the pro shop and a friend of mine who recently retired from playing minor league ball told me that they were told by the Rawlings Reps. Obviously if A-Rod wanted one, im sure he could get it, but think about it if every minor leaguer and pro player used a PRIMO instead of HOH, thats a lot of Primo leather to go around...

I have heard the same thing about the leather I am just saying it is bogus. If all their pros were interested in the Primo it may pose a leather supply problem. But right now NOBODY is using the glove. I think it would help give legitimacy to the Primo if a couple MLB guys were using it. I will even ignore the fact that they are getting paid to do so.

Also, this is the second year of the Primo and the tannery is still are having problems keeping up with production demands? Maybe they are not as exclusive as I thought.

The black pro preferred's defintely hold up better, I have the black trap exclusive to Don Morton's, and it still is mint. I play 4 times a week at shortstop using it and it still looks new, my friend (our secondbaseman) has the camel model similar to Chase Utley and it look like hell. It is good shape , which I mean no tears or cuts, but the camel leather is just so dirty. I have never bought a camel reason because of that, I like the look of them, but I just don't see them holding up will. Our catcher uses a camel mitt, if I could take pictures you would faint, looks like a pile of dirt
