Mizuno World Win Question

I agree with your assement bs... Sort of like when car companies used the name from classic muscle cars and put them on cars later on. They owned the name and figured they might as well get some more value out of it.

I doubt World Wins were ever big sellers. I doubt glove companies make their money with their top of the line gloves. I would think they make it on volume selling $49 gloves at Walmart.

In the car world, there was a phrase " people come to the dealership to look at the Corvette but drive off in a family car". People look at gloves the Pros use then buy the $49 dollar version to use in rec ball.

The high end market has expanded in recent years - probably as baby boomers got older... So my earlier statement that high end gloves isn't where the money is may be less accurate today then in the past... The key is probably forecasting sales and how many of each glove to make and put in the marketplace.

date this one

Postby softball66 » April 13th, 2008, 10:11 pm

Mike, can you date this one pretty close:
a rare USA Mizuno 1b mitt that I'd discussed with Worldwin about. It's a Worldwin-MWV 300.

As far as I know, there are no date codes on the gloves. I think Mizuno pulled out of manufacturing gloves around 1997- 98 so I would say mid-90's for that 1st base mitt. It's really a beautiful piece of leather -one that will patina and look better with age. A shame more people don't know about them and raise the price for your auction.

The tag on the glove has a very small stamped date of 1982 on it...Not sure if this was put on by Mizuno Japan or not.Image

MWV-710

Postby GloveGypsy » April 15th, 2008, 8:17 am

I hope you guys appreciate my "soft porn" leather pics. Here is my MWV-710. It was put into service this past weekend. It will be an awesome glove when I get it broken in.

World Win Lace

Postby bs » April 15th, 2008, 10:35 am

What's up with all the 3/16" lace in the finger tops and webs? The Japanese manufactures have never seemed to place much value on using thicker lacing in the important parts of a glove.

Check out this MWV-500 on Ebay:

What's funny is they used the World Win model number and put it on a later Classic model glove...

i was under the impression that the classic was not their top of the line glove. interesting to see that a pro would be using it. (or was it their top?)

I think it is a custom glove and not really a "Classic". Scott Rolen used a World Win MWV-500 for years - I think when the World Wins went away they made the closest thing they could using Classic parts ( maybe with better leather). But they kept the MWV-500 model number!
