New trend pitchers with open webbing?

Postby splinters » May 23rd, 2008, 7:48 pm

I noticed that Houston Street and Zack Greinke use H web gloves...Is this a new trend for pitchers to use non closed webs...I have seen lots of them use modified trap webs but had not seen H webs before. -matt

so does that mean that they aren't concerned with the batter "reading" their pitch?

Interesting topic. I remember reading something in the 60's about Paul Richards telling one of his pitchers, Wade Blasingame, not to use an open web glove. Found the article on line. http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ ... /index.htm
Bob Gibson used a Spalding with an H web during the 1967 World Series against the Red Sox. It was on display in the Hall of Fame. Interstingly enough, it was a Carl Yasztremski model. Gibby also used what appeared to be a Rawlings XPG6 with the two-piece web in the early 70's.
The XPG6 Mantle model with the two piece web was very popular with amateur players in the 60's but didn't get a lot of use with the pros. It appears now that about half the pitchers favor that style web. Wonder what caused the fad to change?

Carlos Silva was using a Rawlings I web to pitch vs the Yanks today. Looked like a PRO1000-2JB. Doubled up in the pinky too.

Dennis Eckersly used an open web back in the 70's and 80's.

It's a trend that i see a lot more in the college game. for some reason a lot of the teams that use nike gloves miami and unc for example their pitchers use h webs. Zach putnam from michigan uses an h web as well.

Nike Outfits the big conferences sports team with uniforms and equipment. I had mom sew a "Bauer" label over my "CCM" hockey gloves in college.
Aim for the corners and let the middle take care of itself.
