That's funny. Yes, I liked it. I actually found it while at the school book fair. The whole concept I found interesting about what sets others apart from the norm "the outliers". I liked his take on why asians are better in math and the differences in well to do kids and those in poverty. Although, the innercity school thing bothered me. The whole idea that they recruit "certain" lower income/poverty kids I'll never agree with. I'm a firm believer in "teach the unteachable and love the unlovable" none of this cherry pickin' BS.

My wife found the "entitlement" conversation with the kid going to the doctor dead on for her upbringing. I was the other group.

Number9 - The Bends would be in my next five - next time you are down I'll have to show you my music room. Thanks for those eateries in Boston - I'll have to try them next time we are up there.

okdoak - if you liked the Series of Unfortunate Events movie you should really read the books - they are a gazillion times better. I know the books are meant for younger readers but I think the dark humor and literary/pop culture references make them more enjoyable for mature readers. :)

No problemo.

Anna's is on the Green line C train across the street from the Summit Ave stop. Drive there on Beacon Street. Technically it's in Brookline, though there are other Anna's in Boston. Great burritos. Nay, the best burritos.

Brown Sugar is on the Green line B train, Babcock Street stop, near Agganis Arena. Drive there on Commonwealth Ave. Great authentic Thai food. There was also a smaller Brown Sugar location in the Fenway, just a short walk from Fenway Park. Sadly, it closed.

Oishii is on the Green line D train, Chestnut Hill station, Hammond Street on the other side of Rt. 9. One of the best sushi restaurants around. My mouth is watering right now.

Joel, Scarface AND Godfather! That's gangsta! 8) Saw Pink Floyd (Unfortunately not DSOTM) and thought you were going to put Wizard of OZ as the movie!

It's great we all love different types of music. Which makes me wonder every time I go to the ball park about players entry songs: Chipper Jones seems to always have Ozzie Osborne's Crazy Train, Trevor Hoffman had his ACDC Hell's Bells, Mariano Rivera has Metallica's Enter Sandman. What would it have been like long ago with the same concept? Babe Ruth coming out to some ragtime song or Christy Matthewson coming out of the bullpen with duster to some jazz or ragtime music of the period? Probably pumped them up! :D Sorry, I'm probably the only silly bastard that thinks of this stuff. Haha!

"The Italian fiend!"

Postby okdoak » June 26th, 2009, 12:49 pm

I absolutely loved the Unfortunate Events movie, Brett! My daughter read all the books and of course was kind of disappointed that some of her favorite parts were left out. I guess the movie covered the first 3 books? I can see how they would be interesting reading and I love dark humor. I'm more into non-fiction these days and there have been so many good ones lately (Into the Wild, Thunderstruck, The Devil in the White City). Anyway, there is so much quotable dialogue in that movie and we're disappointed that they didn't make a sequel. Every time we come to a railroad crossing in the car now, I say to my daughter "I could be the ultimate Dad!". We're (more so my daughter) very afraid!

Joel, I really enjoyed Crazy '08 also. Great book! Led Zep's "Kasmir" is an incredible song! If I'm ever in Chicago again I'm heading straight to Portillo's. The only place in my small town that had Chicago Dogs burned down a few years ago. I've been going thru withdrawal ever since!

Nice list rmiller. Saw Fleetwood Mac in Irvine when they were doing their touring in the late 90's. Speaking of Little House, did you ever see the baseball episode? Talk about the equipment being inaccurate!
