It seemed that there was just one great glove after another out there this week...
Bob McCann a regular seller of super premium gloves had a couple on the auction block this week. The first was a lefty webless crescent padded workman’s glove in very solid shape. Unfortunately, the pictures of the glove are no longer available online. The description of the auction read…
Fine 19th Century Web-less Workman's Style Baseball Glove. Crescent-padded, tall and narrow pre-web style workman's glove with soft and supple leather and early wool padding inside. Adult size, measuring approximately 9" x 7 1/2". Exterior leather is soft and supple with no rips or tears. Interior wool lining does have some wear to it with a small, approximate half dollar size section that worn away inside where you would place your hand.
The other one that hit the block was a JC Higgins Honus Wagner model, a rare and early endorsement indeed. Bob’s description of the glove read as follows…
Rare Circa. 1915 Honus Wagner J.C. Higgins Co. Player Model Fielder's Glove. One of the earliest of player model gloves. Strong example of this coveted player model glove. Large, adult size 10" x 10" glove with soft and supple leather with no rips or tears. Interior leather is nice as well. Features Higgins Co. cloth patch on back and Higgins logo and model number can be very faintly seen on heel. Features Wagner's facsimile signature (J. Hans Wagner) on lower right area of glove.
The workman’s glove earned $2200 on 12 bids, while the Wagner garnered $680 on 8 bids.
Yet another case of a missing photo, the MacGregor KC1 in very solid shape sold for $560 on 27 bids. Some estimates on the forum had this one going as high as $850, so it sounds like the buyer may have landed himself a pretty good value. This glove of course was the subject of some controversy. The seller admitted to not knowing much about gloves and a collector offered to buy it before it was on the block too long. Fortunately the seller then did some home work and realized the issue at hand.
Seller vborjon has sold some beautiful gloves over the last couple of weeks, and one of the nicest is a Mickey Mantle MM personal model from Rawlings. The glove did have very, very light writing on the pinky and was relaced, but it is a very nice example of a classic. This one ended at $380 on 21 bids. While we are on the topic of Yankees, the same seller also had a very nice Roger Maris Autograph model fetch $225 on 13 bids.
And then there were plenty of others to choose from. For my money the Thos Wilson mitt below is a beauty. I put the Robinson HOH in there because I love the style and it seems that the combination of the HOH leather, the endorsements, and the style make this glove relatively rare. WOW, what a week.
