Best of Decemberists 2017

"On the Bus Mall", one of my favorite Colin Meloy songs, sold for... wait a minute, I'm somewhat confused. Let me start over.
A 1940's Ripon ambidextrous glove sold for $1776. I think the bidders were also in some confusion here with the Reach 1912 version.
That's the only thing that explains it or maybe living in the "Legendary" past. Who would pay that kind of money for a rag like that.
Recent prices have been brutal.

A circa 1940 Wilson model 2080 glove sold for a whopping $49. I just love this "outseam" designed glove. It is built like a tank. The condition of this one is pretty nice. The two strikes against it were the ink on the patch and it's not the "Andy Pafko" endorsed model. Only one bid. Sad.

Keyman has it for $750-$1000. I think one reason it went so high is that it's rare and the only USA ambi, as far as I know. Plus the Reach is virtually impossible.

As someone who has been selling some gloves on ebay lately, I've accepted the fact that there's just no predicting how they will do. One glove that I'd swear would bring $150-$200 sells for half that price, another one that I was hoping to get $50 for sells for $200. I've looked at gloves on ebay for 17 years now and thought I had a decent handle on prices, but the only thing I'm fairly certain of is this; if you have a 2,3, or 4 collectors who really, really want that glove it will do really well. And if you don't, it usually won't. Sadly, that's all I know.
With the 4100 gloves listed in the Vintage Baseball Gloves section, I can see how some of them just fall through the cracks unless you check ebay every day. My guess is that 90% of them will never sell for their listed prices and they're just clutter.
That Ripon ambi is a head scratcher for me. If I had that kind of money to spend, that glove wouldn't crack the top 100 of my wish list. But, that's just my opinion/preference and one more thing that make this hobby so fascinating.

Agree on the demogorgon post - very neat - my wife thought it was funny as well. And a Colin Meloy reference too - this month is shaping up well. Just needs Vermont label glove to top it off.

A vintage crescent pad catchers mitt sold for $125 on ebay. I believe it to be a Ratsch Peerless model. It may have been sold through the retailer Sears, Butler Bros., Shapleigh Diamond Brand or even Chicago Sporting Goods. Hard to tell at this point. It has the tell tale Ratsch buckle strap design and the distinctive crescent pad built into the perimeter banding. This one is a youth model and has seen a fair amount of wear.

I like to refer to this as the PAC-MAN model.

A 1930's "Doped Palm Special" glove sold for $129. Not actually a "Rainey Trap" web but a knock-off with a different lacing pattern. Funny that it sold for the same as the real deal Spalding Pro-Form earlier. No mfg. visible but an interesting glove nonetheless.

A neat two tone sewn web 1920's Goldsmith glove sold for $177. Looks to be in pretty good shape.

A few gloves/mitts from Hunts. A 1920's sewn web Spalding glove sold for $365. It looks like the "World Series Model" BB1 and features the King Patent lacing. The exterior leather is really in excellent shape. Too bad the inner lining is shot. I have a spare inner lining if the winner is interested.

A Reach "Babe Ruth" base mitt sold for $1410. A rare one especially with the patent laced wrist strap. The mitt itself is in outstanding condition.

A very common glove. Quality and condition count though and this one has that. This Hutch "Pep Young" model sold for $135. I like the blond leather. Hutch was not particularly known for professional level gloves but from time to time came out with some top tier models.

A Stall & Dean "Ted Williams" model sold for $129. The glove is in really nice condition. The back panel is unique to say the least. I like the "fishtail" wrist straps! The S&D designers had been part of the government LSD experiments in the 1940's.

A really sweet baseball counter sold for $285. I'm used to seeing the catcher's mitt version. This William Read & Sons base mitt counter is in great condition and rare.
