Best of February 2017

A lucky collector pointed this out to me. Sometimes it pays to ask questions. The photo below was the only one on the ebay listing and there was no description.

The Winchester base mitt turned out to be pretty nice. The whole lot sold for $240

A Spalding crescent sewn web glove sold for $875. Some loose stitching on the front but otherwise intact.

A Rawlings "Bill Doak" model J sold for $29. Missing the web. It has the earlier Doak tag. The model J infielders glove doesn't show up that often.

A 1930's Stall & Dean glove sold for $125. Shows some wear and tear and seemed like a fair price but the deal fell through. Now relisted at $250. Another interesting selling strategy. The glove has the later S&D patch and is double stamped with the S&D logo on the heel and pinky.

I've felt for a long time that all the mint/unused vintage gloves have dried up in the U.S. and are now only in European/Scandinavian countries.

A very rare circa 1926 Rawlings "Joe Hauser" model base mitt sold for $29. The mitt shows some wear and tear, however the Latina patent trap web and pinky/thumb snaps are intact. This was an expensive mitt back in the day.

A 1940's Wilson model 601 glove was a good buy at $71. This is the outseam model popular among collectors. I thought it would go for more. May be the broken lace and dirt turned some people off. Seeing beyond the dirt, this will be a stunning display piece with a little bit of effort. Please post some "after" photos. Go easy on the tag!

A mint 1920's D&M G41 "Charles Hollocher" glove/hang tag & ball/box sold for $2827. The glove/hang tag and ball/box are outstanding in themselves. What gives the glove more cachet is that it is Babe Ruth's model. There are ads in the D&M catalogs showing the G41 model with autographs of dozens of other star players of the day overlaying the glove illustration. May be it was a regional marketing strategy that the glove was used as a "famous player" model at times.

An unusual Diamond Brand glove sold for $170. This one has the extended pocket way up into the first and second finger stalls. It looks something like the J.C. Higgins "Larry French" model

Two 1920's Spalding base mitts sold for $230 despite being in a weird category. They are both buckle web models and both show some wear and tear.

Three beauties from the same seller that had spirited bidding.
A 1930-40's Goldsmith "Mel Ott" model MO glove sold for $510. Looks close to near mint. Got to be a high water mark for the MO model.

This glove/mitt combo sold for $147. Both show a lot of wear. The glove is a Higgins "Grover Alexander" model. The mitt is a Spalding with the 1930 patented lace wrist strap. Whenever I see that mitt design I think "Home Run Special" and there is a"B" stamped in the pocket. There were other Spalding models with the "B" so probably to good to be true. It would be a nice find if the stars aligned.

An early full web crescent sold for $475. Not in the best shape but the cloth patch is interesting. I can make out "American Quality" and the initials "SHC". I wonder if that refers to an early example of Simmons Hardware Co. brand.

With all of these exciting D&M's posted and still to come, this is a call for catalogs, especially D&M catalogs that may shed some light on these. Mike will have a field day researching on our behalf. If anyone has any catalogs they would like to share, please e-mail me pics of each page or you can mail me copies and I can PDF them and post them in the Glove Library for everyone to see. Jared Wilson has been kind enough to send over his Wilson catalogs and Joe was kind enough to put out a Rawlings only Catalog Source Book. Information and research is what makes this hobby more fun. Thanks all.

A 1900's full round mitt sold for $1225. The mitt shows a lot of wear and some damage to the thumb on the glove section. There's also a loose buckle and heel stitching. May be a good candidate for a restoration. It looks like it was made by the same company as Ralph's "Victorian" embellished mitt. There were several patents for full round and integrated thumb mitts in the early 1900's. Manufacturers experimented with that design for a time. Interesting that the perimeter lacing is only around the top section. Overall a pretty unique looking mitt.

A 1950's MacGregor "Willie Mays" model G101 glove sold for $259. It's a transition style from the older "SpiderWeb" model and features a two piece solid web and laced wrist strap. The glove overall is in great condition.
