Best of October 2016

A BIN to start the month. I wonder if Jared snagged this one. I didn't last long on ebay. It's a rare Western Sporting Goods base mitt, mid to late teens. Seems in decent shape with the logo barely discernible at the heel. Thomas E. Wilson expanded his empire with the purchase of Western Sporting Goods. They merged into Wilson Western in the 1920's.

Man Mike you are good. You could sniff me out anywhere. Tim tipped me off shortly after it was posted and I had to take a look. I thought it looked in fairly decent shape and the Stampings were still there. And like you said, the connection the company had to the Thos. E Wilson company sealed the deal. Not many TEWs come up for sale anymore so I've expanded my interests to the pre Wilson glove manufactors. Got a lucky break on this one. Thank you for posting it Mike!

An early crescent fielders glove sold for $738. The white leather model looks to be in good shape. The cloth patch is worn and unreadable but may be a J.C. Higgins brand.

here's another where the godfather called. It's a really nice Ken-Wel "Dazzy Vance" model 560. Despite the small hole in the palm, this one has a lot going for it, especially the really strong markings in the pocket, leather condition and the two nice 1920's patches.

A1940's OK brand "Ralph Kiner" model SH glove and box sold pretty quickly. Hope Brett was able to snag that one. I'm not into boxed gloves at all but this seems like a nice package, at least the glove looks pretty spiffy.

Bummer Brett, great box. That's the tougher style. I didn't see it either. Unlike Mike, I love boxes. I'm a list guy and if I can get something on my list in the box, all the better. Then I can check that glove off the list forever and not have to try to upgrade it. To me, it's the pinnacle of the hobby. Rationale, there are two different camps or schools of thought in glove collecting, condition and rarity. Unlike most, I prefer rarity to condition. For condition guys, you can't do any better than mint in the box, and, original boxes are rarer than the gloves - even better. I just wish I jumped into that camp way sooner than I did as I missed out on way too many great boxes that I wish would come out to play again.

It can be an interesting discussion of the four variables; age, condition, quality and rarity. I am more of a condition guy which is evident in the glove below. It got away from me twice, first time was last year as a quick $60 BIN and last week resurfacing momentarily as a quick $160 BIN. the Kennedy "Johnny Temple" glove below also has a fair amount of the rarity factor going for it. Kennedy bought the factory equipment and rights to the Ken-Wel name around 1950.

Another glove in great condition. A 1970's Rawling's "Brooks Robinson" model XFCB30 sold for $89. The glove is a mid-line model in new old stock condition. The "Flexomatic" palm gloves were the norm at the time and this one harkens back to the '60's models with the "Lazy S" pocket lacing. The glove features the stylish "Longhorn" back panel.

A nice Dubow "Ki Ki Cuyler" glove and box sold for $225. The glove seems in really good shape with a pristine white leather lining.
The box looks intact with a vintage look to it.

An 1880's catcher's glove sold for $7200. The finger tips were all missing which sucked but overall a nice model, possibly a Spalding by the look of it.
