Best of October 2015

Some decent modern era gloves but not much shakin' on the vintage glove front last month. This month started out with two stellar vintage examples from the same seller. First is a 1920's Marusan sewn web glove. It features the one piece face patented by Rihachi Mizuno in 1922. The laced wrist opening was an added bonus. It sold for $340.

Second is a 1920's Splading "World Series Model" AXP basemitt. It seems in great shape with most markings visible on the face. It sold for $416.

A rare Spalding "Babe Ruth" glove sold for a best offer on ebay. The model WW has a pretty cool looking web that was popular circa 1930. The glove itself shows some wear but the markings are really nice on the front.

A rare 1970 Rawlings model RL-!P catchers mitt sold for a best offer in the neighborhood of $400. The mitt looks to be unused. There is an unauthenticated Johnny Bench autograph on the mitt. From what I read, Bench would collect various high end Rawlings mitts and sign them for charity events. This one is a real beauty.

A nice sewn web glove sold quickly for $49. It's a Western Sporting Goods model from the early days before Thomas Wilson bought them out to expand TEW Sporting Goods. Not many Western Sporting Goods gloves out there, especially with that killer tag.

An obscure L.E. Bennitt Athletic Supply glove sold for $517. Its a sewn web model in surprisingly good shape for a light colored leather though not as pristine as the Ruth glove above. That Spalding is sweet. I could tell the Bennitt glove would be fought for by the guys collecting New England Mfgs. and obscure brands. I stayed out of it. There are usually a few collectors primed for one like this. Beside the stellar condition, I really liked the double stitching on the wrist opening. Bennitt's was a local sport store in Conn. They were a Spalding distributor back in the day, although the glove doesn't look like a Spalding model.

I thought my bid at $507 was crazy - glad there was someone nuttier than me (the winner placed more bids so it could have gone higher).

A 1920's D&M "Walter Johnson" model G40 sold for a best offer on ebay. The glove shows a fair amount of wear but the stampings in the pocket are still very clear

A 1930's Goldsmith "Joe Marty" model AG68 glove W/box sold for $222 on ebay. The seller was listing a bunch of gloves. This was the best of the lot.

That Woody English seller had me drooling. He had a trove of 1930s Cubs: Woody English, Hack Wilson, KiKi Cuyler, Riggs Stephenson, etc. etc. All in very respectable condition, all on very fair and tempting opening bids. If I had a spare $1000, I'd've bid on them all, and would've let none escape me!

The "Mascot Brand" glove from Western Sporting Goods that was mentioned earlier was resold on ebay for $185. Better pictures and description show it to be a pretty nice and collectible glove.
