Best of January 2015

Postby mikesglove » January 5th, 2015, 3:49 am

Some nice gloves and mitts to start the new year.

A Stall & Dean "Tris Speaker" model 0945 glove sold for $761. I have seen other photos of the glove and the endorsement is stronger than the auction photos reveal. Its a rare model and seems in good shape.

A 1920's Goldsmith "Chief Meyers" catchers mitt sold for $385. Another very rare endorsed model in fine shape.

A 1940's Olympic brand "Frank Crossetti" glove sold for $260. The glove is close to near mint condition.

The seller that had the Crossetti / Chief Myers had a lot of nice gloves up for auction - they all seemed to do well but there were a few bargains in there. Wonder if these came from a long time collection or what?

A few more form the same seller above. There were some nice models. The "Chief Meyers" Goldsmith mitt was a surprise.

A 1930's KenWel "Harry Gumbert" model 564 sold for $213. Close to near mint and the double button wrist strap is cool.

A couple that were somewhat of a bargain. First the OK Mfg. "Bobby Doerr" glove sold for $88. Classic triple tunnel web model looks great front and back.

The second is the Stall & Dean "Stuffy McInnes" model base mitt that sold for $83. Great factory markings on the face and minor wear overall. This one is a real beauty.

Just a brief word about the Chief Meyers Mitt. I was the winning bidder, coming out of glove collection add-ons hibernation to go after this one. It's a model I've wanted for as long as I've known enough to want it. Maybe 15 years or so. I received it yesterday and it's fine; great strong stamping and original lace. just a really nice example. The thing that I have to mention is that it's much darker than the photos suggest. Much darker. I like it, I'm keeping it, but I could easily see someone else getting really annoyed by the difference in color between the photographs and the actual mitt. It's clear all these seller's gloves had the same brightness to them (as pictured). I would have preferred a more accurate set of photos when considering it as something I wanted to go after. Just sayin'.
Attached are photos of the front and back from the day I received the mitt. It cleaned up a little, got a little lighter, but nothing like the seller's photos. I love it just the same, :D

Another Stall & Dean "Tris Speaker" glove from the same seller as the previous S&D "Speaker" glove sold for $975. It looks to be in better condition than the first one.

An early Goldsmith "Christy Mathewson" glove changed hands privately. It's possibly the model K and really super looking with the extra long finger stalls.

This Ken-Wel catchers mitt and box sold for $177 - the box may be the coolest glove box I've seen. Congrats to the winner for a super deal!

The box is super nice. It has the earliest logo depicting Ken-Wel as a sign attached to two posts and a beam above. Great graphics on the top and sides.

A circa 1915 Reach model 7N mitt sold for $294. A mid-line model, it is listed in the catalog as a fielders mitt. That makes it pretty rare and this example is in outstanding condition.
