Best of December 2014

An 1890's hand made "Folk Art" catchers mitt sold for a best offer. Pieced together from leather, heavy thread, twine, shoelace and stuffed with horsehair, it's really well crafted and spectacular in its own way. Definitely one of a kind.

A Pennant brand glove with box sold for $222. Near mint glove with rolled leather piping, grommet web and stellar markings in the pocket. Seems like a bargain for such a high quality item.

A 1920's Reach "King Patent" model glove sold for $465. Well used but looks intact. A popular collectors glove.

A Stall & Dean made C&S brand base mitt paired with an unidentified full web glove sold for $441. Both glove and mitt look to be in really good shape.

A Victor crescent pad glove sold for $731. Well used but intact. Early Victor gloves are pretty tough to find.

An early full web Wright & Ditson glove sold for $373. The condition is stellar with the cloth patch and markings on the front very strong.

Three near mint gloves from ebay. First is a 1950's Wichita Sporting Goods brand made by Nokona. Great looking glove. It sold for $125.

Second is a stellar 1950's Kennedy brand "Johnny Temple" model glove. Great cloth patch and pocket stampings. It was a bargain at $60

Third is a 1920's Simmons American glove that sold for $226. Blazing blue and gold cloth patch and pristine white leather. Too bad about the ink.

A nice white leather Reach full web glove sold for $387. The glove looks to be high quality and intact. Some markings on the front are still visible and the back is really super.

A nice circa 1925 Wilson "Ray Grimes" base mitt sold for $200. One of Wilson's best mitts at the time. This one is well used but with some diligence could clean up to look way better. The buckle web is intact and has a cool looking leather keeper. The cloth patch is in good shape with vibrant colors. The mitt features an interesting "fastback" design.

A 1950's mint Spalding "Al Smith" model glove sold for $180. A high quality glove.

A trio of gloves/mitts sold for $100. Auction only lasted about 7 minutes. The only one worth mentioning is the Nokona "Joe Jackson" model and it alone was definitely worth the $100. The condition and markings are stellar.

This 1920's sewn web VIM glove had a fair amount of interest and sold for $110. The main attraction was the circular area in the upper pocket. Kind of inconclusive if there was any exterior stitching to define that area but was reminiscent of the Stall & Dean "Hole in the Pocket" patent of 1906.

A Dubow catchers mitt W/box and a "Chuck Klein" glove sold together for $240. There was also an old no name baseball. Glove & mitt are mid-line models. The mitt is near mint and really a beauty. The box is pretty thrashed. The Klein glove is so-so.

As Murph mentioned, the Duck Web glove sold for $1875. I think it is a Simmons Brand identical to a model I had. There used to be a cloth patch above the wrist opening detailing a licensing of Frederick Ratsch's Duck Web patent. There is a little blue left in the Simmons patch on the wrist strap. This one is in great shape with the finger webs completely intact (mine were trimmed off). The glove overall has normal wear, free of any nasty rips or tears, and displays really well. It is a survivor and a rare find.

A 1940-50's MacGregor Goldsmith "Frank Gustine" model JH glove with box and ball sold for $50. Another auction over in a heartbeat. The glove looks close to near mint and with the box and ball, quite a bargain.

Some gloves/mitts from Hunts live auction. Very tough to get additional photos or response about size and other detailed info from these folks. At least Hunts presented photos of both sides of some of them which is a rarity. Other than that, the bidders are pretty much on there own. There were no bargains here but some pretty nice early models. The star was this grommet back baseman's mitt with crescent pad on the front. I would have liked to see this one up close. It sold for $1495. Looks to be in great shape. The webbing seems to be lacing through eyelets built into the thumb and body.
