Best of May 2012

Postby GloveCrazy » May 1st, 2012, 11:27 am

My preference is the more the merry across the board: more gloves, more eras, and more participants. I miss a lot on ebay so I'd really appreciate your help posting what you see or win. I like lots of collecting subsets so feel free to post anything that is special to you, even if not that expensive.

OK, let's start the month off with a Walter J. "Duster" Mails that went for $93+ with real cleanup potential. Mails is a tough name, and I only recall previously seeing the Rawlings Lutzke-type 3 finger version.

Hey Rob, Just a quick note to say I like your sentiments regarding "Best of May". I agree. Let's face it; we would all like to see interest in the hobby expand. If I think back I can still remember, maybe twenty years ago, uncovering an old catcher's mitt in a junk shop that had gone unappreciated for years. There will be people this month who discover the existence of this glove hobby for the first time. Let's give them something to look at. :D

Okay.......Here's one I went after. I'm thinking this is going to clean up nicely. I've been down this road before. Can't remember seeing a Wilson 625 but it clearly resembles their other top early 40's models. Sometimes collecting is about what's good that's also affordable. I thought this one was worth a shot. Hope nobody minds it being listed here. I'll show post cleaned up pics when it's done. :D

You can't top the leather that was used on those Wilson and Spalding Professional Models. I'm amazed at how some of them have managed to stay so supple 70 years later.

I absolutely agree. When I said, "I've been down this road before..etc." it's really about the quality, thickness and toughness of the leather (along with the design of the web and the over all glove). I've cleaned up 602's, 604's , 607's and of course 614's (Teddy Ballgame). I'm really looking forward to this one. :D

Thanks Mike ... I can't wait to see the "after" shots. Just got back from a little glove trading road trip so I apologize for being a little slow in posting so far this month. Here's a cool Gehrig fielders glove that ended last week for under $500 which I though was a real good deal. I get a kick out of those models that the player never played that position (Ruth catchers?!!)

There were also a couple tougher OK's that ended under $100 that I don't recall seeing before, a Bill Dickey and George McQuinn, which look like they are in great shape. Brett, you end up with these?

What else have I missed?

There have been a ton of Bob Feller gloves on ebay, but this is the first Wilson 900 Personal Model that I remember seeing. Looks like it was only made in 1939-40 and sold for $8 back then. This one went for $79. Wonder if a righty will ever show up?

Hadn't noticed the "Professional Model" stamping on that Feller, Greg, pretty cool. Some other nice leather that has recently sold on ebay includes:

a real nice Reach crescent fielders for $1,450

Man, there has been some really cool Sonnetts and OKs this month. The timing is a little ironic with Brett away at Brimfield.

A stunner Harvey Kuenn that went for just under $200

A very cool OK 3-finger splitfinger -- not many of those out there -- with cool webs

Having all those models in my collection, it makes me feel good to see strong prices and not have to compete for them. :D

Michigan Hardware glove box with catcher artwork sold for $187. I've seen this series on Denkert boxes before - I actually just picked up the basketball one recently. I'm sure the box can be put back together and look sharp in a display.
