I've always heard of the expression as lipstick on a bulldog, which is sort of ironic because I traded rickybulldog for a bulldog Goldsmith catchers mitt that had magenta nail polish on it.. I should probably put this in the cleaning section, but a good general tip is to not paint your nails near your gloves.

My dad used the expression "That guy is laughing all the way to the bank" usually when the conversation dealt with oddball inventions or marginally talented performers (think Pet Rocks or Tiny Tim, if anyone remembers him). If I got $406 for those gloves, I'd be doing the same thing. I know that ebay works in mysterious ways, but that's just beyond beyond.

In NYC we would say something like, "If you liked that one, I've got a bridge I can sell you that goes all the way to Brooklyn!". :D

Here is another interesting one from ebay, a 1920-30's Philippi-Wishart Co. Sporting Goods mitt that sold for $63. it's a good sturdy model although dry and dusty. The black leather could clean up to look pretty nice. The brand is a rare one. The partners, Mr. Philippi and Wishart were gunsmiths out of Memphis at the turn of the century who expanded into a more complete sporting goods store. they started their operation about 1907. Nice intact cloth patch.

That Philippi Wishart is nice. My grandfather has several knives he bought from their store on S. Main many many years ago when he went with his dad as a kid. I don't gravitate toward mitts, but I hate I missed that one.

The everlast was a filthy beast but cleaned up real nice ... eventually (not much with the label, yet). Here it is along with my Alexander Speed to show how very similar the features and tailoring are (it is 10" tall). Darn thing even has the standard 8034 type Stall & Dean numbering, but no hidden Speaker or Cobb, darnit. Bert send me yours.

I haven't done much with the Leacock other than the lining and piping (which will lighten a little over time). May just keep that one as it is because I sort of like the way it looks, and will likely be talked out of it one day by one of the white glove cleaning boyz. Thing's pretty massive at 10" tall and 9.5" wide.

The Phillipi Wishart is another huge mitt, measuring in at 10.5"" X 10", that really cleaned up well with some TLC. I think this one can even go cleaner.

Last but not least is the "bat web" from last month that I finally laced the finger webs and added a little rolled web because that's the way I roll.

Nice work, Rob. Can't wait to see what you do with the Leacock. You're amazing.

A 1950's Wilson "Phil Cavarreta" "BallHawk 3" glove sold for $161 on ebay. A great looking glove in top shape.

No Mike, you are amazing. Now let's start trade talks for your new Rawlings.

And that Cavaretta is sweet!

I get it that I'm Mr. Old or Unique or buckleback full web or Stall & Dean or fat 40s, etc, but last week I picked up two more modern gloves that I've been quietly stalking for years, a TT10 Musial trapeze for $175 and a TST 60 Dick Williams "seven finger" trapeze for $45. The Musial is the nicest one I've owned, by far. I just ignore the ink on back because beggars can't be choosers. Although the Williams isn't my nicest, it's the one that I'd probably use in a game if I played infield (and the TT10 outfield). The Williams is also one of the first gloves that got me started into collecting when I found a near duplicate -- except it had large marker all over the back -- at a grungy Long Beach, CA junk/thrift shop in the early days. That was one of those gloves where I tried about everything, from cleaners to abbrasives, only to learn that when they say Permanent Marker they mean it. And I don't want any flack that the TST lower numbers are higher quality. They are, but there's something special about this model to me. They were also both made in the early 60s which was a special era for me. Sorry for the long explanation, but that will hopefully save me from local collector ridicule.

This Wilson oldie grabbed quite a bit of attention. $306.99 and 17 bids. Even with the tear on the binding it's pretty special.

Don't mean to be antagonistic or argumentative, but I just don't see what is so special about this glove. Seems like a fairly ordinary youth model in average condition and a lefty to boot. I saw it only as a bidding war. The $40 offer from someone after the listing started is pretty funny though.

My thinking was that its "specialness" is derived from its age. How many Wilson full webs do you see. This might be one of the oldest Wilson gloves to surface for a while. I didn't bid on it, but i think that's the appeal.
