A 1940's Hutch "Ted Williams" model 42 glove sold for a BIN of $115 on ebay. In really solid condition despite the broken lacing of the tunnel webbing. I like the Dubow patent out seams on the back of the finger stalls.

A 1950's Hutch "Ted Kluszewski" Trapper sold for $85 on ebay. The mitt has seen only a little wear. Nice contrast of the white lacing with the leather.

The 1920's Wilson "Babe Ruth" model 605 sold for $8500 on ebay. At the time of the 1995 sale, this was considered the best Ruth glove in the hobby. Still not much of an argument to dispute that claim. I cleaned up and reformatted the photos a little for better clarity for the archive.

Maybe that's the case Murphusa but maybe not. The back of the glove looks suggest the glove did not see much wear while the front is darker in color and seems to say otherwise. A likely scenarios could be that the glove laid on it's backside for many years which exposed the front to the everyday dust and spared the back of the same. This could explain the dark tint to the front and not the back. A close look does not show many tell tell signs of actual play. I once had a white crescent glove that was just like this. When I received it the front of the glove had a dusty grayish color and the back was white. There was a small thumb tack hole in the liner that indicated to me that it had likely been tacked to a wall for many years which exposed the front and not the back to the everyday elements of dust and sunlight. All it took was just an extremely light cleaning and the entire glove turned back to snow white! It was an unused 100 year old crescent pad that was just awesome. I am in the camp that thinks that this particular Ruth glove will clean up and look drastically different than the credit the eBay photos project. Congrats to the buyer! Hopefully it won't go underground for another twenty years..:)

Cheers

I'm with Bert on this one. I LIKE IT! I have a bunch of white gloves and similar sewn webs and I believe the stampings could remain in tact with that type of leather. It looks like a smooth soft leather, not a nappy or buck type leather like a G41. A different type of leather would have made me question it more. It's hard to say without actually having it on my hand but what's the worse case scenario - that it was touched up? With a one in three glove model known (Wilson 605 Ruth), and the toughest, rarest Ruth model on the planet, it wouldn't bother me for a minute because it is still stunning. I'm just glad that it came out to play after all these years. We had all known about it from Joe's Newsletter 15 or 20 years ago but didn't know where it was.

I’ve wanted this glove for about 20 years... remember it form the newsletter as well as old polaroids Bill Diebold once showed me. Since first learning about it, I’ve owned two other Thomas E. Wilson 605 Ruths (a grommet-web that’s now in JD’s collection and another one-inch web that is nice, but not as nice as the illusive eBay example). As far as I gather, and I’ve discussed the 605 Ruth with many collectors over the years, only three have surfaced. It was produced for only two years, 1924 and 1925, perhaps resulting in today’s scarcity.

With regards to the 1992 newsletter reference to Ron Carlson believing that D&M manufactured the glove for Wilson, I disagree. Though the 605 and G41 are similar, they are not the same. I’ve compared several examples side by side and there are distinct differences; in form, size, materials as well as construction. My theory is that Wilson, trying to capitalize on Ruth’s monumental 1923 season, introduced the endorsed 605 in 1924. Ruth used D&M gloves and began endorsing the G41 in 1921. It’s my assertion that D&M pressured Wilson to cease production of the 605, perhaps citing exclusivity. Just speculation on my part, but possible given that the 605 only lasted two years while the G41’s production run ran from 1921 to 1927.

As far as the possibility of the silver being touched up, it immediately crossed my mind when the listing hit eBay. I reached out to several collectors for their trusted opinions and not a one thought there was any restoration. I seemed to be the harshest critic. Won’t know for certain until a closer examination is made on the glove. That said, if it was touched up, it was done over 20 years ago as the old photos match-up to how it looks today. Wouldn’t that make it a vintage restoration and more palatable for collectors! In any event, it’s a wonderful example of the rarest Ruth glove made, I’m glad it came out of exile.

This letter and copy of Wilson’s 1924 catalog accompanied a one-inch web 605 Ruth I bought several years ago. Seems that a prior owner actually contacted Wilson in 1976 inquiring about the glove’s history... the grandfather of glove research!!!

How do you guys find new listings of gloves for sale? I go to a site that shows me new arrivals for Ebay, but it misses some items like the glove above(not that i could afford to bid on that one). Do searches on ebay always show newest entries?

This particular glove had been listed for a while as a Buy It Now or Best Offer by hammontree3152. It was a couple of hundred dollars higher, I think around $600. It was in the Vintage Sports Memorabilia section under gloves/baseball. I saw it under a search of new listings a couple of weeks ago. I didn't sell so he reduced the price and relisted and got a quick offer and accepted. I know where you are coming from with your comment. These Buy It Now/Best Offer transactions morph in and out of ebay quickly and can seem to appear out of nowhere. They sometimes will only stay in new listings for a matter of minutes and are sold and drop out into completed results. Nothing anyone can do about unless they wish to stay in front of their computer 10-12 hours day constantly updating. A fair number of my posts have been this type of transaction and I must say there are some good deals to be had if you hit the listing at just the right time.

Thanks mikesglove for the reply and clarification. I understand what's happening now. I usually just search whatever i have set up for searches(mostly auctions and not bin). I best change my settings. Thanks for the help!

A circa 1915-25 Pennant Brand 1" web glove sold for a BIN price of $375 on ebay. The glove is in super shape with good markings on the front and almost no wear on the back.

Two similar and great looking Rawlings 1950's gloves:
A "Harvey Haddix" model HH sold for $194 on ebay. Markings seem a little light in the pocket but the glove overall is in good shape.

A 1958 "Herb Score" model HSP sold for $390 on ebay. Markings are much stronger in the pocket and the special black and gold 50th anniversary patch make this model a little more rare and collectible.
