It looks like a late 30s/40s 1B mitt to me. Considering how rare this glove is -- I've seen it on a couple wish lists -- I think the price paid was possibly a bargain depending on how well it cleans up. I was just glad to see a lot of bidding on something other than a top-of-the-line model or really weird model. Prewar HOF collectors, this is a REALLY tough name, right?

I think the brand on the Chance glove(s) is Rich, a wisconsin store that sold gloves in the 50s and 60s. have a couple of their fielder's gloves, but with no endorsement.

Opinions differ, and everyone's entitled to view it their own way, but I don't consider the Chance in question a "real" Chance. Sure, it's a filler for a pre-war HoF collection, but it's far from a playing days mitt. Similar can be said for the Nokona Joe Jackson and the Hutch Cy Young. To me, at least, the Young is a bit more desirable because it's somewhat vintage and uses his actual signature in the stampings. The Jackson, which is from a completely different era than his playing days, is of decent quality. The Chance, however, aside from being produced long after his playing days ended, is block letter and flimsily manufactured. But like Rob said, at least there's interest in endorsed gloves!

In the end if it's good enough for John Graham's collection is sure is good enough for mine. I think I'll start working on a Mack

This should be an interesting debate, and I see both sides of it. I would certainly rather have an older George Sisler or Babe Ruth than the late 30s/40s versions, and that 70s advisory Babe Ruth doesn't count at all (advised through a seance?). If there isn't an older model available, like Joe Jackson, then I lean toward it counting. And yes, I tend to agree with the John Graham book (or Jim website) as barometer for availability for older models. To expand our list of interested participants, I personally don't think imports count for players who have a USA available, even if the USA is really tough (Koufax), and think you should strive for the "Personal Models" for those readily available like Mantle, Mays, Aaron, and Musial.

That D&M glove standup display is very cool. It was probably the one that sold on ebay a couple of months ago. Speaking of Hunt, the fanfest auction included two really nice gloves, a beauty webless and a huge display model. Anyone have pictures and prices they could add?

I go on-and-on about how special the G41 Ruth is, but I also REALLY like the Reach full web model. This one slipped under the radar at $585.

The Pie Traynor picture box and beauty glove went for a reasonable $502.

And yet, another bargain Gehrig this month at $698.88! Now watch, we won't see another ebay Gehrig for 8 months.

A smaller Goldsmith full web with nice cloth label but missing button for $61. It isn't perfect but looked like a good hole filler.

The endorsement and the Home Run Special lines on the Ruth glove had been enhanced with a black marker, so it might not have been such a good deal

Yikes! That's a horse of another color. I'm glad I didn't notice the glove, because I often miss flaws in the description.

This was added as a note at the bottom of the page 3 days into the auction. So if you had placed a max bid in the first few days and never went back to the description you got burned. I cancelled my bid when I noticed it

"The lettering BABE RUTH HOME RUN SPECIAL on the glove is very light. I have had this glove in my collection for years. it may have been penned over to bring it out for display. I dont know if this was done, I liked it and I bought it, I purchased this and the add from a well known dealer and I guarantee that it is a babe ruth home run special glove 100% without question."

I saw an inked over Ruth HRS Spalding at Brimfield a couple years ago - it was nicely done but you could tell if you looked close enough. Wonder if it was the same dealer??
