Winter 2012 Picks

Postby vintagebrett » January 22nd, 2012, 7:51 am

Had the chance to go up to Maine yesterday to check out the amazing football/tennis collection of Ed Turner, one of the authors of Antique Sports Uniforms and Equipment (http://www.schifferbooks.com/newschiffe ... 0764330186). It is an incredible collection and I enjoyed my education in all things vintage football! Ed is also an antique dealer and gave us a chance to look through his "inventory" room and pick up some nice items. Ed is a great person and I'm thankful for the opportunity to be able to see the collection and buy some great stuff!

Wow Brett, what a great experience and some buys! Thanks for posting. Few more details on what you purchased? Side notes?
Anyone remember Curley Wayne from Maine, (Wayne Curley) who used be among our ranks?

Here is the one item I'm keeping for my collection - it was in the book they wrote. It is a Victor Wright Ditson with a corduroy backing. William was with me so I had him check it over - seems to be all original. Need to go through some catalogs and see what I can find. Not a top of the line glove but very unique.

Great corduroy glove. That's cool. I have one too. Haven't seen too many of them.

I have a few Wayne Curley gloves in my collection. Haven't heard about him in years.

I like the corduroy gloves. An interesting material choice---you'd think a year fielding ground balls and the backsides would be toast. But they do look cool.

I too would be interested to know if Victor Wright Ditson or any other makers had these listed in catalogs.

This is from a 1922 College Athletic Supply catalog. It doesn't show the back of the glove, but the description says that it's made of corduroy. I'll send the catalog to JD when I get a chance.

Guess I'll need a little help from Brett to rotate the pictures. :?

murph and okdoak, thanks for posting those pictures! Very cool to see this wasn't a folk art piece.

I have only picked up one glove since late November but it is a nice one. I became interested in the Sonnett "Lightning" model after several earlier posts in Gloves of the Month and Brett's prototype model. I've only had a Sonnett basemitt so I am not familiar with that brand. I always like the graphics that Sonnett used and this particular model was their top glove in 1964. The "Bat Web" is an interesting feature and once I tried the glove on, The overlapping of the web across the thumb and forefinger stalls made sense. The extra layer of leather really reinforces and frames the pocket nicely. The shortened first and second fingers on the front creates an extended pocket and all in all the glove seems to match anything Wilson or Rawlings had to offer in that time period.

Picked up this interesting Spalding crescent recently - very well made glove with the tops of the fingers squared off. I've seen this feature on Victor but never a Spalding - pretty neat.

Here is a description of the square cut finger design from a 1910 William Read Catalog.

Below is another square cut glove from an ebay auction a while ago. Don't know the brand. Brett's Spalding glove above is nice in the extra length below the crescent pad to protect the wrist. That was something Spalding advertised for their infielders models.
