My New Favorite Glove

Postby ebbets55 » August 2nd, 2009, 1:48 pm

This Goldsmith Wally Pipp is now my favorite basemitt in my collection. It's a super huge top of the line mitt in almost perfect condition. Thanks Mike for letting this one go. I know it couldn't have been easy. I love it though!

Hunkaleather J.D. Do you have the trifecta Yankee 1b mitts: Pipp, Gehrig, Dalhgren?

I know Missoula's pretty close, so to quote one of my favorite Simpsons lines:

"A beaut from Butte" :)

How many other Pipp gloves are out there? This has to be the best example, hands down. I can't recall seeing another, in any condition.

A woman found one amongst some junk and posted it on eBay a few years back. If I recall correctly, it wasn't a buckle-web and not nearly as nice as this one. I could be mistaken, though, and this could be the same mitt. Jim, do you know the background on this one? In any event, there are only a scant few known examples, enough for a wood-shop teacher missing a few digits to count the entire population on one hand!

Hi Guys,

Joe, had the trifecta at one point. I no longer have the Dahlgren though. I have never seen another Pipp in all my years of collecting (didn’t see the one you are referring to Jerry), but that’s beside the point. It’s one of the biggest softest mitts I have ever seen and number two only to the Kelly in my opinion.

The lineage on this one goes like this. In the old days I used to go to Long Beach Veterans Flea Market. I would bring a few bucks and more often than not I wouldn’t spend much of it because I never found anything. So, we had this rule, called “Gate at 8:00”. That’s where I would meet John Kanuit or Mark Nash and go shopping out of their trunks. Since John always had great gloves, I had a better chance in bringing something home. John had this one in the trunk and I loved it but it was sooooo expensive that I didn’t buy it. I couldn’t even if I wanted to. Years later as my collection got more advanced, I always regretted not getting that one. You know, the one that got away story. Mike turned it up years later and didn’t remember where he got it. When I suggested John, he said that’s where it came from. So, it went from John to Mike to me and that was since the late 90’s. This one is locked up for good.

Ah, not the case at all. This time it was soooooo expensive X 2.5 but I didn't care. The regret would have killed me again. He was nice enough to let me keep one arm and one leg.
