Baseball Mitt For Panama

Postby softball66 » November 2nd, 2008, 3:45 pm

A at large East Texas flea market this weekend and found, what for me, is a first. A glove that looks USA made 1950s style double tunnel first basemitt, large youth size but fits my hand. It has the following stampings in Spanish that maybe some of you might help with. One word didn't translate, "Ciga" as part of "Ciga Mayor". . .
The largest stamping is "Professional Modelo". At the top of the mitt, partly obscured: USA, Deportes Panama R. P.
Modelo=Model
Deportes=Deport
Mayor=Grande or Grand
I've never seen a glove with Panama markings. Lots of Mexican i.e. the
Doc Hughes from WWII, the Valdez Modelo. Have fun with this one:

This mitt didn't seem to generate much interest but I took it to my Spanish speaking friend at Heritage Sports Auctions, Stephen Carlisle who helped me with some of the Spanish Stamping. I had the word "Ciga" wrong. It was Liga
Liga Mayor "A" (Major League)
The word "Deportes" Stephen informs me, translates "Sports."
Stephen was still curious about the Panama aspect of the glove. :idea:

Clarification

I read your posting about the glove from Panama. I think the "Ciga" should be read as "Liga" which translates from Spanish to the English word; league. So "Liga Mayor" translates to "Major League" . I think it was some kind of script writing which makes the capital "L" look like a "C".
