very nice. The R4000 is todays Pro 1000 pattern the difference was only the back fingers and I changed the 1000 to the 4000 back fingers in the early 90"s( easy to sew)

Questions for our panel

Postby softball66 » August 4th, 2008, 11:27 am

That Docglove's got a memory like nobody's business!
I was curious about the Concepcion glove as we had listed an R400 for the 1977 Catalog Source Book, not R4000 so I musta left a "0" off the end. It shows as a $60 glove and last among the American mades: XFCB, ($84) XPG3, Pro 1000, XFG6, XFG12, Reggie Jackson at $64.
Curious story about Concepcion gamer that showed up in an Ohio Play it Again Sports store and purchased by one of our long time glovers from that area. He showed up to have the glove signed at a show by Davey. Ran into a problem. Dave looked at the glove and said, "This glove was stolen from me." Whoa! Our guy explained and got the glove backed from an unhappy Concepcion.
I had seen the glove, a Rawling XPGC I think. Virtually no padding in the heel.

I was always under the impresion that the glove listed in the Catalog Source Book was a typo, as I have seen a handful of R4000's, but never an R400.

Either way, that glove has been on my radar for a few years now- I envy you for finding one! I've seen a three or four on eBay the past few years that were either in pretty bad shape or sold for more than I wanted to pay. They don't turn up very often!

This would be a definite upgrade to my "Big Red Machine" collection, where Concepcion is represented by a middle-of-the-road KM6 model.

Yes, that's a nice looking R4000. I have a Rawlings Concepcion too, I think mine's a GJ57.

Right On

Bret, Bob you guys are right. It was R4000 in the catalog. I transposed it wrong. Add the last zero to your source books.

I had a thought about the "Curious story about the Concepcion gamer."

Couldn't they have made a deal, perhaps give Dave back the stolen glove in exchange for another signed glove or something of the sort? Maybe throw in a bat or something to sweeten the deal.

Seems like they could have worked something out to make everyone happy.

Caught off guard

Postby softball66 » August 6th, 2008, 1:21 pm

Good point Robin. I don't know how it all got worked out. Problem was the guy who owned and bought the glove at PIAS, wasn't there when the glove was presented to Davey to sign. He was in another area of the show and had his son in law get the signature. Both Dave and the son-in-law were surprised by the discovery. All the son-in-law could do was give a second party story about where the glove was purchased, etc. Davey was grumpy but signed the glove. Rawlings had probably gotten him a couple more.
This harkens back to the stolen Jeter glove doesn't it. And maybe countless others.

Wow -- thanks a lot. I completely missed this story. It's amazing that a guy making a million a year would risk it to make a couple thousand pocket change. Course I'm sure he never imagined for a moment that he could get caught. Still, it just goes to show...

Quote that sums the whole sordid story up:

"Ruben Rivera once was considered a top prospect in the Yankees organization, but frustrated management with his lack of discipline on and off the field."

Boy he was something wasn't he?

I know this is an old post, but I am interested if you think of selling the Concepcion R4000
