Glad that I had spare parts

Two recent additions; one from one of our great forum members and the other from ebay. The Des Moines glove needed a wrist strap and the Spalding was missing the button. Not a perfect match on the wrist strap, but the piping was pretty close to the glove's. It is one chunky glove, with a neat button and the first one of that maker for my small sewn web collection.

That Spalding looks fantastic and so does the McWilker! Now, I have some questions because I too have tried the button thing and I am curious how someone else did it. Did you detach the button from the 2 pieces? If so, how?

For those of you who have analyzed the buttons they are 2 parts connected by 2 miniature hooks. I've never done this because I found it difficult and my needle nose pliers couldn't do the job.

Now, if you didn't detach the button did you just glue it?
Or did you cut a tiny hole in the leather and twist the button in?

If you're curious on how I did it, I did it by using a razor blade and making a tiny incision in the leather smaller than the bottom of the button and then carefully twisting it in. The button is secure, but still has the chance of popping out. Also, the tough part is getting the old leather out of the area where the button has clasped together. The more leather you can get out the better it can stick. I've only done 2 gloves, but that's where I've found the most success.

I'm looking for a better way to replace the button, too, Ricky! The way I did it involved a drill, hacksaw, and a lot of swearing! I cut the base off and drilled out the connecting piece that's left inside. It spins along with the drill bit though, so that's where the swearing comes in handy. I used a base piece from a snap kit I bought at a craft store and super glued it to the original button part. All in all it was kind of a pain. Wish I could help you out with that Joe Medwick Marathon; the only Medwick I have is a Davega. And thanks for the sewn web offer. Think I'm good for now, but if you have a spare G C Alexander... I struck out on two of them last week.

okdoak! you are a magician with the leather, serious handyman! those are two great lookers! interesting technique with the button, i understand the swearing aspect of the process.

also looking for the spare GC, ricky you got two?? that s&d this week was great and affordable. my internet at work was so slow i clicked submit with 10 secs and then when it came to confirming time had elapsed!!!

on a more serious note, youre one talented glover. you want to take on that Alex Taylor W.Johnson I picked up??? Im to scared! I havent touched it since I picked it up.

Thanks for the compliments, Jared! Yeah, that Alexander glove has me scratching my head... So hard to tell how readable the stampings were esp. the signature. I would have bid higher if I knew they were decent (of course everyone else probably would have too!) I am kicking myself for not emailing Brett sooner on the one he had, though.
Don't know if anyone could pry your Walter Johnson from my sweaty hands if you sent it to me. Seriously, I'm still learning as I go, and I would hate to mess up on one as valuable as yours. Thanks again!
