Recent haul, D&M Stengel

Postby Number9 » June 10th, 2009, 3:15 pm

Found this collection at an antique mall on the NY/MA border a few weeks back. The seller wouldn't break up the collection so I ended up pulling the trigger on the whole lot. Paid a fair price, it wasn't a steal, but I think I did well. Most of it will be for sale or trade as some of it doesn't line up with my collecting interests.

The gloves I really wanted were the D&M one inch and the W&D full web. All the other stuff is pretty nice, just a little late for my taste.

I suspected the D&M to be a Casey Stengel, but when I looked it up I couldn't find anything with that model number or even a glove listed with his endorsement. I know he was a D&M endorser though as he is shown on an ad that I have. The model number is JG32. I'm not sure what the J designation stands for. I don't see it listed on any D&M gloves in my old source book. His signature is clearly there. I can read C D Stengel. Looks like there might be some script missing from his name. His full name is Charles Dillon Stengel so it all makes sense. If any of you D&M collectors have any info on this glove please let me know. I'm not holding out too much hope however as the old price guide that I have has him listed as "none known".

Wow! Amazing find! That glove looks great. What are the measurements on that bad boy?

Josh, that's a backside you can appreciate!

The Stengel is about 10.25" tall by 10" wide. On the large side for sure.

Thought perhaps it was a gamer based on the model number being unlisted and with the unusual "JG" as opposed to the stand "G", but Stengel was a lefty. Darn facts.

Number9, I did some searching on this glove. On JD's site, there is a copy of a 1923 D&M catalog that show a picture of a G32 with what looks to be a C D Stengel endorsement. You may want to asked JD to look at the catalog as it's a little difficult to look at the endorsement when you increase the size. Plus, on a previous page of the same catalog listed players from the Giants and Yankees that used D&M gloves and the name Stengel appears on the list of names on the Giants. A quick Google search of Casey Stengel's bio listed him as a player on the Giants from 1921 to 1923. With that, it is likely that you a Casey Stengel endorsed glove which would be, maybe the first known.

I just wonder what the J in the JG32 model number stand for. Congrats on a super find!

Great stuff! Betcha won't think twice about stopping at an antique store when pulling off for gas ever again!

The Stengel glove would be another addition to the mystery D&M's that we've discussed on the board before - there have been quite a few.

Thanks guys. This glove is right in the center of my interest, sewn web, great quality, New England brand, it wasn't going to last long in that store. Still, I really didn't know that I'd have turned up the first known Stengel. Pretty cool.

This find is going to make every road trip a lot longer. I mentioned the story to Brett last week at the GBSCC, so I might as well share it here. I'll keep it short, but basically, I was low on gas returning from upstate NY. I pulled off the highway to get gas and noticed an antique mall next to the filling station. I never find anything, ever, so I was completely prepared to walk out empty handed. As soon as I walked in they were set up on the table inside the door. It was meant to be. I didn't have cash on me so I had to mail a check when I got home. The wait was killing me.

William, what a great find. How cool is it to turn up the first known model of anything, let alone a 20's D&M 1" web of Stengel. Love hearing these stories. Here's the best pic I could come up with. Sure enough the G32 was a C D Stengel. The J has to be a regional mark or a mark to a specific dealer.

J Model

Postby Bravosin99 » June 10th, 2009, 11:25 pm

We also have a 20's D&M where the model number starts with JG. Posted a question in a previous post about the J being there. Still a little confused.
