Bill Doak models

Postby oldballfan » August 22nd, 2007, 10:48 am

How many models of the Bill Doak gloves are there? I have seen the model 'H', but right now on ebay there is a model 'J'. Are there any more models numbers, or in this case letters to be aware of?

There were many variations of the Bill Doak gloves issued between 1922 and 1952.

This list is from the glove collecting price guide:

1922-1930: Original version (simply called the Bill Doak)
1931-1938: The Improved Bill Doak
1932-1934: Doak Kenworthy
1934-1941: H-3 and 3-F models (3-finger gloves)
1932-1952: H-model
1932-1943: J-model
1945-1949: 5BD-model

If you go through the catalog data year-by-year, you can even find some variations from that general list. Additionally, Rawlings would sometimes produce Doak models for other sporting goods retailers and those might be labeled a bit differently.

The various models represented larger or smaller gloves, long or short fingers, different web styles and various colors of leather.

If you check out "ebbets55" vintage glove gallery web site, there are a couple of dozen different Doak gloves on display.

If you like this forum, you would absolutely love the vintage glove catalog books and price guides. These guides are the "bibles" of the glove collecting hobby. If you're really into vintage gloves, these books are essential!

I enjoy helping others identify their old gloves or pointing out some arcane facts about a glove's history. It might make us seem like "glove geniuses", but the fact is the groundwork for this wealth of information was laid years ago by Joe Phillips and Dave Bushing.

They did all the hard work. We are just reaping the benefits from the fruits of their labor!
