Marcellus Hartley bought the Bridgeport Gun Implement Co. of Bridgeport CT. in 1878.

He expanded the production of sporting guns by purchasing interest in Remington and Winchester Arms Companies. He also established an agent in New York City to import tennis and Golf gear from England..

In addition to tennis and golf, Hartley added other sporting goods such as baseball equipment.
The baseman's mitt below has a tag from BGI and also the trademark "Bridgeport Athletic Mfg. Co."

The mitt is from JD's site http://www.baseballglovecollector.com in the "early glove" section of the gallery.
the mitt is really stylish and the only one that has a diverted thumb seam of all the mitts in that section.
