It seems like I've seen a handful of D&M-endorsed gloves or D&M glove contracts in recent years with player names that don't show up in the D&M catalog listings. I realize the Catalog Source Book has a year missing here or there, but the 20's and 30's are pretty complete. Any hypothesis on why that might be?
That's a great question. A lot of names have popped up over the years, names we didn't think ever appeared on gloves. The Norway find proved that.
In the 1920's D&M claimed more big leaguers were using their gloves than any others. They had a ton of players under contract. Those players might not have had a glove model but I'm sure D&M had their signature somewhere on a contract or in the files to stamp a glove if necessary.
In researching D&M gloves, you have to use catalogs, not just the Vintage Baseball Glove Catalog Source Book. You also have to read the captions for the different models. It tells you which players used or played with specific models.
Here's what I use help sleuth a light signature on early D&M's. Hope it helps.
