Need help identifying my father's glove

Hoping I can get some info on my father's glove. I found it when I was cleaning out our house, and my father has been battling dementia, so getting answers from him has been difficult. It's a 6-finger, or Trapeze style from we think the 50's or 60's, but a Google search hasn't turned anything up. The only markings I can find are "Service" in the palm, "Custom Cut" in the inside thumb, and "Full Grain Texas Steerhide" on the inside pinky. Any assistance would be awesome. I'm trying to get the photo size smaller so I can post it.

Hi...nice glove...sorry to hear about your father going through dementia, but I think it’s a very cool thing to find his glove and try to figure out what it is. I’m by no means a glove encyclopedia like some of the collectors on this site that may be able to chime in with the exact maker, model and year(s) it was produced...hopefully one of those guys will see this and chime in. What I can say is that I think your basically on the right track...it’s a trapeze style glove form the 50-60’s would be my best guess. I know that Rawlings made this style for awhile...and I assume other manufactures had this style also, like Wilson, Spalding, etc...

Again, it’s a neat glove, and quite a keepsake for you...priceless!! I love the two-tone leather on the back of the glove...the brown and black leather on alternating fingers is somewhat more rare to see and makes it stand out a bit more to me. Cool find while cleaning around the house!! Good luck with more info. Some of these guys may be able to show you a catalog page for that glove with its original description and price;). Between Mike, William, JD, and Brett some more detailed info should hopefully pop up for you. Take care!!

Eric

Thanks glovejunkie. Agreed, it’s priceless. I played catch with my 13 year old son who’s been using my glove, while I used my father’s. I know he played in the Boston Park League, and according to my mother, was pretty good. Again, there’s no model markings or patches on it. On the wrist strap, there is a small rectangle with red stitching, but the patch is missing. Looking through a Rawlings catalog, I see ones that are similar, but not the same. I also haven’t seen anything with the 2 color back. I’m hoping someone can get me at least some solid info.

If additional pictures would be helpful, please let me know.

I think the glove is a 1960’s Japanese knockoff of a Rawlings glove. It looks to be well made but the stampings indicate an import model and not a domestic product. Trying to pin down the manufacturer is going to be difficult as there are a bunch of import labels from that time period but not a lot of information regarding the companies that made them.

That sounds like a pretty memorable game of catch!! Yes, some more pics may help identify it...sometime having a pic of where the tag used to be helps...tag placement was sometimes different for each manufacturer...and tag size and color obviously. With the red stitching and knowing that Rawlings made these for sure...I’m leaning towards Rawlings as the manufacturer of it...they had a large red tag with white lettering I believe and the red stitching probably would have matched the red tag. They’re may not be one actually listed/sold in the catalog specifically with the two-tone leather...that could have just been something they did on this particular glove, again, I believe...so that may never match up...but you should be able to match something up to the other markings you see in the palm and on the fingers. Sorry I can’t nail it down for you exactly...but your on the right track for sure!! Good luck

Ah...Brett beat me to the post...disregard my info...go with Brett’s for sure, lol

Japanese knock off of a Rawlings sounds right to me, and a good reason it wasn’t found in the Rawlings catalogs...still a very cool glove to have for you to pass down to your son;). Thanks Brett for the better info.

The glove is a Service Brand, made in Japan. probably from the 1950-60's era when import gloves flooded the U.S. market. Service Brand had many models and can still be found on ebay from time to time. The model below shows the tag.
