Has anyone seen this catcher's mitt before? It appears to be an hybrid of the trap eze style and this one has a leather piece that slips in the pocket on the back side below the "finger webb" that is held in place by a velcro strip....presumably for extra shock absorption against the palm. Could this be prototype?

Hi Hal, nice mitt! It's not a prototype but a pretty rare USA model. It was made in the mid '80's. There were different web versions. most were imports. I'll post some pics later.

Here's a Terry Kennedy model with the cantilevered Trapeze web.

The cantilever design was patented in 1982 by Rollie Latina.
The purpose was to extend the web, add flexibility and a layer of protection to the catchers palm.

Below is a super example. This one features the "Form-U-Lace" web, a Latina patent from 1978.

The Ted Simmons model below features the cantilever web taking up the whole pocket of the mitt.
