My Rawlings RR and some rolled lace web pic's

Postby okdoak » July 18th, 2017, 8:05 pm

I thought I'd start a new thread for rolled lace web photo's. Photobucket is holding the ones I'd posted in the past hostage and I've decided not to pay the ransom. I like using Imgur now and I've heard good things about Flickr as well.
I picked up that Rawlings RR that was on ebay a few months ago. The seller ended the auction early and that always looks suspicious, so I hope I can explain what happened. After I bid on it, I noticed that there was a tear in the pocket and contacted the seller to ask if he'd post a better picture of that area. He said that he didn't want to amend the listing and was just going to end the auction. He asked me if I was interested in buying it "as is" off ebay, I made him an offer and he took it. I was high bidder at the time with one under bidder. I assumed that there wasn't much interest in it because of the condition. All of the original laces were gone along with most of the tag. The web had been replaced with one from a Macgregor Goldsmith and the glove had seen a lot of use. Anyway, I patched the tear, relaced it and made a web for it, and had a replacement tag from a beat up Bill Doak.

You didn't need a Rawlings RR to have a rolled lace web.
So many players of that time put tape on their webs, even conventional webs.

I'm guessing the rolled lace web was popular in Mexico, too. This one is endorsed by Manuel "Popeye" Salvatierra.

MacGregor Goldsmith came out with their version later in the 1940's, featuring round tunnel webs instead. Here's a Pete Reiser JCL.

1949 catalog listing for the Ralph Kiner model. Both the Kiner and Reiser models used to show up on ebay occasionally. I haven't seen one for awhile.

Here's my Ralph Kiner RL "Snare" model. Got it off ebay awhile ago. One of my favs.

Here's a 1940's "Carmona" brand. It looks like a Nokona made mitt. I don't think the rolled lace web was outlawed in the Mexican leagues.

Another one of Roy Sievers. Looks like the fingers are laced through on this one.
