Black gloves are so cool...why'd they stop making them?

Postby okdoak » May 14th, 2017, 10:34 pm

Atabat's posting of Joe Cronin circa 1936 with a pristine white sewn web got me thinking about white and black gloves. We've all seen a lot of them from the sewn web era, but they became less and less common after that, especially white ones. I can see the rationale for phasing out the white ones, they don't stay white for long. Rawlings, MacGregor Goldsmith, and Geo. Reach made the odd black model into the 1940s and I remember somebody posting a beautiful black Spalding DiMaggio years ago. The only black 1950s glove I can think of was a Nokona model, and by the 60s, they seem pretty much nonexistent. It's too bad. I keep thinking how cool a black Musial Playmaker would look.

This is the one black 1960s glove I have. I wish I had one as a kid. It probably wouldn't have helped my fielding, but at least I would have looked cool way, way out there in right field.

Anyone else remember any 50s or 60s black or white (!) ones?

Sweet glove and the piping is in really nice shape! One of my personal favourites is the Geo. A. Reach Bruce Campbell glove.

Another glove I just discovered a couple of days ago, on the Bay of E, is a 1950s Newman-Stein N993 Monte Irvin endorsed glove. Really sharp looking but the piping is shot on the bottom of the strap and heel.

mikesglove's 5BD Bill Doak in black is a stunner as well.

Someone also posted a beautiful Rawlings Marty Marion US Army issued glove in black. I can't remember the user unfortunately and a search didn't bring it up for me.

Great looking gloves. Geo. Reach made big, high quality gloves in the 1940s. I have one of their Professional Models that is a favorite. That Monte Irvin is one scarce endorsement.
I knew I'd seen a black Bill Doak, but couldn't remember if it was on here or one that I missed out on on ebay. That is a beauty.
I have one of the Marty Marions.

The other black glove I have is a Macgregor Goldsmith Ewell Blackwell from the late 40s. It's a stubby finger Pitchers' Model. There's a picture of it on the Elden Auker thread.
I found a picture of Blackwell with a black glove, but you can't see much of it.

Here's that Spalding DiMaggio. Not one of mine, unfortunately.

 it was you that had the Marion! Awesome glove. I'm also looking for a Spalding DiMaggio in black for my display. Right now I have a black Geo. A. Reach Sam Chapman as a placeholder.

The Geo. Reach "Bruce Campbell" model is also one of my personal favs. The Rawlings Doak 5BD-B was a no brainer when listed on ebay. I had looked and looked for a certain Wilson glove for a number of years. I bought a couple of place holder examples until this one showed up and I could check it off the list.

I had also looked and looked for a certain white Nokona and couldn't find a pristine one until this came along. A "Billy Loes" model. Wish I still had it.

Beautiful gloves, Mike. The Wilson Pafko with the out seams is a favorite glove for me, too. That glove has some weight to it. :) That's the first Billy Loes glove in that color and style that I've seen. Seen a few of his Nocona "Texsize Trap" models and his Wilsons, but not that one.
The black Nocona I was thinking of was a Bob "Riverboat" Smith. This isn't one of mine, either.

When I first subscibed to The Glove Collector newsletter, they were selling the Nocona reissues. Mike showed the Carl Erskine model in VGOTM. Why I didn't buy this one is beyond me.

I wonder when MLB banned pitchers using white gloves?
Here is a little different version of the Nokona "Bob Riverboat Smith" glove

Still in keeping with 50-60's gloves, I like this Dubow "Carl Furillo" model with the white piping and lacing

Good question Mike, and I don't know the answer.
That Furillo glove has a couple other things going for it; an uncommon endorsement and a Dubow tag. I've seen a lot of Dubows, but very few with tags. Nice!

Rawlings KB Keltner & Goldsmith XG Doerr - the Doerr model, renamed & updated as the G111 was available into the '50's

Does the KB show up in the Rawlings catalogs/source book?

The Frey LFB and Keltner KB gloves are really nice and rare variations. Interesting that Rawlings didn't stamp the Keltner glove KKB like this one. It would have made more sense.

The only other black one I have in that time period is a MacGregor Goldsmith "Roy Cullenbine" XSN Snare Model.

I've always liked the look of the 1950's Cooper Weeks "Black Diamond" model. A lot of whistles and bells on this one.

Mark Walters sent this one. It's a rare 1950's Denkert "Monte Irvin" model in great condition.
