Powhatan Robinson, born in Virginia in 1867, claimed to be a direct descendant of Pocahontas.Image
He established New York Sporting Goods Co. in 1896. The first store was on Nassau St. in NYC and incorporated in 1901. He soon added another store on Warren St. NYSG was a full service sporting good/outdoor wholesale and retail business. In addition to sports goods, NYSG carried automobile supplies, fishing tackle, guns and ammunition, bicycles and outdoor gear. In 1917, Robinson retired and sold his business to Fred Baker and NYSG became a subsidiary of the partnership of Baker, Murray and Imbrie Inc. After 1917, the name New York Sporting Goods was dropped entirely from Baker's business literature.

The photo below shows The New York Sporting Goods division as part of the fine print at the bottom of the Baker, Murray & Imbrie 1917 advertisement.

The circa 1906 New York Sporting Goods brand glove below may be the glove of the year, at least from an auction standpoint. There were some worthy gloves last March from Legendary Auctions but I'm not sure if any forum members were winners of those. As far as this glove, It has the big three; age, condition and rarity.

The pristine cloth patch shows the two company locations and a faint logo on the left side with NYSGC inside. The glove could possibly have been made by Victor Sporting Goods. There are similarities to a recent Victor glove sold through Legendary Auctions. Regardless, the glove really stands on its own as a fine example of baseball equipment from rare but once thriving sporting goods business.

The NYSG building on Warren St still exists and is now remodeled into a boutique residential co-op. The real estate ad states It is close to restaurants and local stores.
