I would like to recognize a collector who went out of his way to make someone happy. I know this kind of thing goes on all the time by a lot of you but this one was pretty special.
In another post, I asked who won the Mike Cvengros glove because I was contacted by a family member who was putting together the family genealogy. I get these notes all the time but this one was different, genuine. They had been looking for a Cvengros glove forever and had never seen one til it popped up on eBay recently. They had no idea how much to bid and lost in the end. The winner reached out to me and said he won it, felt bad and was torn because he really wanted it as it is what he collects. I told him to keep it then and I would keep looking for another.
I let the family know I found the guy and I would get back to them when I heard back from him.
I traded a few e-mails each with the family and with the winner separately before putting them in touch with each other and the winner decided on his own to send it to the family because he knew how much it meant to them. He came to the conclusion that it meant more to them than to him and thought it was the right thing to do. The responses I received from the family and the original winner were priceless and I’ll leave it at that.
It reminded me of years past when glove collecting was so pure. Those of you who have been around for awhile think back. Remember meeting all the great people, and for the most part, glove collectors had the reputation of being “good guys”. Every couple of years I get reminded of the good people in the hobby. Two years ago in Baltimore with Jerry and Parker comes to mind (sorry inside story).
So, for doing something truly generous and cool, this month’s helluva guy award goes to Jared Wilson from Michigan. Jared is a “great guy”.
