Northern Wisconsin was a popular getaway for some gangsters in the 1930s. Al Capone vacationed there. It's a beautiful area with hundreds of lakes surrounded by huge tracts of State and Federal Forest land. I'll bet it was pretty remote back in the 30s. Good place to hide out
