Interesting comment above about Harry latina and Red Rolfe regarding the Rawlings model RR glove.
Circa 1940's photo below with Red Rolfe on the left with his rolled lace web model. "The Outlaw Glove!" Frankie Crosetti on the right with a nice triple tunnel web glove.

I wondered if anybody would pick up on that tidbit about the web being outlawed - thought that was neat. The entire publication is now up in JD's library under Glove Articles - it is titled 1950 Rawlings Roundup. There are some other neat pictures in there plus a fun little read - won't take up much of your time to check it out.

I didn't know 1950 was the year the rolled lace web was outlawed. I wonder if that was just for pitchers & fielders. Yogi Berra seemed to be using the rolled lace web into the 50's.

Below is a photo of Crosetti, Dimaggio and Lazzeri in the dugout. Crosetti and Lazzeri wrapped athletic tape around the double tunnel webbing to form a makeshift solid web. Pretty cool! Wonder what DiMaggio is using?

Below are the DiMaggio brothers. Great photo!

Heres Dimaggio with his own rolled lace web model.

here's another photo in the 1940's of DiMaggio on the right with his rolled lace glove in front. It may be a Rawling's model

A purported D&M gamer glove of Jim Cooney of the Cubs, circa 1927

Image

A letter written by Cooney to D&M asking for modifications done to the standard tunnel loop webbing of the "Walter Lutzke" 3 finger model. Interesting notation by Cooney asking for the G75"X". Also interesting are the team travel plans to Catalina Island, CA.
Image

The letter above was part of a D&M ad circa 1927 touting the G75 model.

Photo below is "Wrigley Field West", the spring training facility of the Cubs in the 1920's on Santa Catalina Island off Southern California. It was quite the tourist attraction. The Cubs used the field till 1951. After a Spring of bad weather including a snow storm(whaaat?), the cubs moved spring training to Arizona.

Warren Spahn with a Goldsmith glove

Birdie Tebbetts with his MacG Mitt, probably his endorsed model.

Not done with the "Outlaw Gloves". A great shot of Johnny Wyrostek with his rolled lace web Rawlings glove

Lou Gehrig and Dizzy Dean at the 1934 All Star game. It looks like Dean is using a Goldsmith glove similar to the Red Lucas model with the lower tunnel web removed.

Great shot of Robin Roberts with his MacGregor "SpiderWeb" model in 1957. The glove looks brand new and the surrounding field looks like spring training. It looks like he didn't use the wrist snugger on that glove.

Mickey Vernon on the left and Larry Doby in 1958 as teammates of the Cleveland Indians. Vernon and Doby served in the military and were stationed together in the South Pacific at the end of WWll circa 1946-47. Vernon encouraged Doby to try out for a MLB team after hearing Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and signed with the Dodgers. Vernon even contacted his former Washington Senators team owner about signing Doby. Doby eventually signed with the Cleveland Indians. He played the majority of his career in the outfield but had a few games as a first baseman. The picture below shows the two players with different Wilson base mitt models.

This one's for Brett. It couldn't have been fun fixing corrupted software files.
This is from an earlier post that no longer has the photo attached. It's Ned Garver in 1952 with the St. Louis Browns. Pretty easy to see the "Craft Built" logo on the wrist strap. I don't know which Sonnett model it was, possibly the "Eddie Stanky", Brett may have a better guess. I like the way the thumb seam wraps around and dies into the wrist opening and what looks like a laced wrist snugger.

Thanks Mike - love that picture. I'm guessing it's the Eddie Stanky or Bobby Doerr model. Here's what Mr. Garver had to say when I asked him about the picture.

Nice note! I like the part about "...a man in St. Louis who made our ball gloves just right". Back to the Ned Garver photo; interesting that he prefers two in the middle finger stall leaving the forefinger stall empty.

Joseph Sauer invented one of the last catcher's gloves before the pillow type mitt became the norm. His design featured a layering of padding and leather to the pocket and an extra layer of leather over the separate finger stalls to protect the catchers fingers. Below is one of Sauer's patent illustrations from 1888.
Image

The Goodwin & Co. cabinet photos of 1889 provide a good look at that early era because most of the photos are shown with players and their equipment. The photos also provide a unique look at a very brief time, maybe a year or two, when the Sauer's glove was used extensively and before the pillow mitt took center stage in the 1890's. The photo below is of Andy Sommers and you can see the thick padding and dimpled attachment points in the pocket of his glove.
Image

The back of Joseph Sauer's glove was interesting in the wrapping of chinchilla leather around the fingers and attaching at the back of the finger stalls.
Image

The 1889 cabinet photo below is of Hy Ebright. You can just make out the wrapping of the finger stalls on his glove. It's also intersting how large the catchers glove became by 1889.

1890 Naval Academy baseball team. nice fingerless gloves and base mitt. Way in the back is the catcher with a cool Decker patent mitt with a button wrist strap similar to the Wm. Read models on JD's site. http://www.baseballglovecollector.com

Photo is circa 1900 showing players with vintage equipment. That trophy is pretty spectacular. I think it is engraved "Sliding To Second"
