Vintage glove lot

Postby glsimmons1 » October 6th, 2011, 9:12 am

I just recently purchased a lot of vintage gloves from an auction house in New York and need some help with a few of the gloves. What is the best way to get info on the gloves? A few of them have no markings and I can not find anything on the internet. I have also been researching companies who refurbish these gloves but wonder if that is a good thing or bad???

Thanks!

One good way to get info on these gloves is to post pictures here. The guys on this forum know their stuff! It's a good bet that someone here might be able to identify your gloves just by sight. Sometimes when the stamping are worn off it can be impossible to pinpoint an exact date, maker or model number. But I'm sure you can get a good idea of at least the general era, based on the the design features of the glove.

For gloves where the stampings are legible, "The Vintage Baseball Catalog Source Book" is an indispensible tool for making a positive ID. This collecting guide compiles hundreds of sporting goods catalogs from dozens of companies. With it, you can usually nail down the exact date a glove was made and sold.

Unlike some collectibles, refurbishing a glove will not necessarily diminish it's value. In many cases it will enhance it, if the restoration is done properly. Naturally, a mint condition vintage glove will have a value unto itself. But if the glove is trashed, repairing it is a good option- not just from the monetary value standpoint, but from the standpoint of making it a nice display piece for your personal enjoyment.
