Rev-O-Noc Baseball Gloves

"Rev-O-Noc" was a trademark of the Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett Harware Co. of Chicago. HSB was founded early in the 19th century and was a major supplier of tools, guns, knives and other hardware items. Charles Conover joined the firm at the turn of the century and the Rev-O-Noc brand was born ( Conover spelled backwards). Rev-O-Noc was a trademark on items from bicycles to kitchen stoves and also sporting goods. HSB continued on till 1962 when it was bought out and the name changed to "True Value" Hardware. Sound familiar? There is one in my town.

Very interesting. Have you thought about an E-KIM line of gloves? Interesting history and sustained through True Value days. Mitts aren't bad either. :D

Outstanding research Mike. After all these years, I didn't know much about them. The first piece I got was the empty box. I was then on a quest to get any others I could find. Those four were the only ones I came across. I appreciate you filling in the blanks.

That is a good one Joe, pretty funny. Someone is selling old hardware catalog pages on ebay and some have gloves. These obscure hardware companies to me, turned out to be major players back in the day. JD, as I was googling HSB, I saw some of your search for the Rev-O-Noc basemitt on a forum way back when. I am curious if you can make out the word under the "Rev-O-Noc" on the cloth patch of the catchers mitt.

I picked up a crescent catcher's mitt in a recent ebay bundle. I've been promising JD a pic for the archive for a while now. I'll have to finish that mitt and take some photos.

I have the same patch that JD's basemitt has. Mine says "HSB & Co." over "Rev-O-Noc". Nothing underneath.

Here is a rare and fairly nice Rev-O-Noc welded wire catchers mask that has been languishing on ebay for a while.

The cloth patch seems decent and intact. The seller probably would have the item sold with better picture taking.

Here is a circa 1890 ad for Keefe and Becannon equipment sold through Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett & Co. Tim Keefe developed a machine to wind a ball tighter which produced a livelier baseball. Keefe felt it would make the game more interesting. It became the official National League ball. The Catchers mitt shown is the "Buck Ewing" model. it was well padded and touted as guaranteeing no broken fingers for catchers. For a time, the mitt was a strong competitor with the Spalding models.

Great research Mike. I love it. As i re-read the thread, I just noticed you asked earlier about the other words on the tag. I blew up all the old pictures and I think it says Stay Stitched. Any correlation to the ball stitcher?

JD, I think you are right about the STAY STITCHED embroidered on the cloth patch below REV-O-NOC. I thought it was the name of a city but nothing made sense.

Revival of an old thread. Ran across an old metal/tin sign advertising Rev-O-Noc sporting goods today. I'm guessing it was pre-1950s, based on the gloves it pictured. Some serious surface rust, but neat nonetheless. Probably should have shelled out the $15 the guy was asking. Probably could have had it for $10.
