Nokona "J" Numbers

Postby softball66 » April 23rd, 2011, 3:49 pm

Nokona glove collectors have wondered about the old Nokona "J" prefix numbers for year and the glove catalog source book lists a number of them for the early 1950s. Bobby Storey there told me that the "J" stood for "Jobber" in that these gloves were sold through jobbers and into institutions in bulk like schools, YMCAs, government places. I just came into possession of a couple of "J" model gloves at of all places, a local garage sale. One is an Andy Skurski J120. Sturski, who's biggest stop after being signed in Fort Worth by Nokona, was for the Hollywood (Stars) in the old PCL. Nothing like making it to Hollywood and becoming a star I suppose. He met his future wife there and they later became successful real estate agents in Las Vegas.
But the real story here is that the previous owner of the two Nokona "J" models said that he got them when he was in the army in 1951. He was very definite about that. So, while we've been speculating as to how these J birds got around, seems like some wound up in the service during the Korean War era.

Your post caused me to run upstairs and check my Andy Skurski Nokona glove. It's a J120. All I know about it is that I purchased it on Ebay from JD about two years ago, in excellent condition. Looking at the source book, it appears the J120 was Skurski's one and only model.

You know Skurski is one of those Nocona endorsers who never made it out of the minor leagues, but I always enjoy looking up their careers when one of their gloves show up. We actually got our hands on a Nocona Jobber catalog and the list of endorsers won't knock your socks off (page 61 of the "Catalog Source Book". A few like Ray Moore or Danny Ozark might sounds familiar. The Skurski listed for $12.60, three down from the top glove of Rip Russell. The rest for that year like Russs Rose, Gene Clough, George Dockins, Chris Van Cuyk, Frank Brown, Dick Aylward, Sig Broskie and Ed Tickey were brief major leaguers or minor league players. Skurski did become a Hollywood Star (baseball team). I placed his glove on ebay yesterday if you want to take a look. The front is about average for a 60 year old glove but the wrist strap's Nokona patch is a delight.
