In 1906 Samuel Waring invented a double break catchers mitt to increase the ease of closing the mitt around a thrown ball. The really curious aspect of the patent is the absence of a thumb stall.The drawing indicates a mitt to fit on the right hand. The thumb is left free to roam over the back surface and to apply leverage where needed.
