1920's catchers mitt with air exhaust tubes

Ah, more fun and games with a really weird catchers mitt circa 1920. reading the patent text was as hilarious as the illustration.

Two holes in the pocket connected to tubes which opened up at the heel of the mitt. A pitched ball compressed the air in front of it and these two exhaust tubes were meant to evacuate the compressed air as a ball was being caught, supposedly to prevent bounce back of the caught ball. Crazy stuff.
