1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
For the past 20 years...got my first at age 12, and haven't looked back.

2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?
The family collection (all on www.dugouttreasures.com ) is split between me, my Dad, and my
brother, but I claim 48 of the total as my own.

3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?
Years ago when we were "accumulators", we probably had about 140 or so.

4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?
I think it was about 6

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
Approx. half...we are big into many areas of vintage equip., and enjoy bats, multicolor stitch balls,
and early images equally as much as we do gloves/mitts.

6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?
Not too much to do anymore with printed materials.

7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?
19th Century Bats, HoF endorsed bats, boxed/multicolor stitch ball, catchers masks, uniforms, etc.

8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?
It was antique shows in the early days, but it has really moved over into auctions and trades...we still go
to lots of shows though...guess its the thrill of the hunt.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
Turn of the century thru the 1920's...nothing at all post 1950 unless we are buying to sell.

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
We have kind of made D&M a major focus of the collection over the years.

11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?
Sure...original HoF class inductees, and Yankees.

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?
Wouldn't you love to see a Chief Bender or something like that...I know my Dad would.

13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?
Seriously, there are just too many out there to pick one...if I did, I'd only second guess myself in a
minute and have to re-post.

14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?
Most...90% or so...that being said, we are always open to entertaining offers.

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?
Right now, I'm hot for an early Geo. Sisler...but its gotta be in prime condition...trying to match it to
two real high end, pro model Sisler bats that I have.

16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?
Spalding Crescent Pad glove (patch, button, asbestos, etc.) at an antique show...Jackie Robinson
pre-war glove at an antique shop (should have NEVER sold that), and a boxed Eppa Rixey at a local
flea market.

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?
The Lou Gehrig D&M mitt cuz I know just where to go with it

18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?
Condition, condition, condition...even if its rare....of course, there are exceptions.

19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
To me, a bold, deep, dark endorsement is one of the most important features of a glove.

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?
Hate it...here too there are exceptions, but not many.

21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
Just as Ruth is the immortal face of the sport, the G41 has to be the face of the hobby...I'll probably
second guess this too in a minute.

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
Just my opinion, but we need new blood, and we need this "new blood" to understand and learn the
hobby...a lot of newbies want to start out at the very top of the food chain...more power to them if
they can, but I just think they miss out on the experience of digging thru antique shows/stores and
getting an education from the ground floor up.

23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
Sure am, and am really looking forward to it...will be at the show all day on Wed., Aug. 4th.

Re: 2010 Glove Census

Postby Mr. Mitt » July 2nd, 2010, 11:13 am

1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
Since 1989 when I became disillusioned with baseball cards.

2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?
About 50, an extremely narrow focus.

3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?
About 750. You may like a glove in a picture, but you need to hold it in order to fall in love. Amassing all those gloves allowed me to compare and contrast differences in quality and really learn about the hobby.

4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?
A 160 glove purchase. Yes, it was large and decadent, but the economies of scale enabled me to get what I was after for practically nothing after selling off the scraps.

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
95%

6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?
Absolutely, especially boxes, but anything relating to gloves like printing dies and catalogs are neat divergences.

7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?
Yankee stock certificates, vintage Yankee lineup cards, autographed World Series stubs. I've recently found myself searching pre-war cards on eBay. Would someone please smack me at the National to snap me out of it!

8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?
A smattering of all, but primarily private sales.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
19th Century and turn of the century.

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
Not really, though I do like D&M and S&D a bit more than others.

11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?
Yes, I'm on a quest to compile each different model produced for Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle. This covers glove design changes form the early 1920's to the mid 1960's. Beyond that, I'm attracted to gloves and mitts with unique features and am slowly building that segment of my collection.

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?
Nap Lajoie

13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?
D&M G99 Alexander and Goldsmith KB Wagner are my favorite endorsed gloves, while an S&D buckle-web fielder's glove is on the top of the heap for gloves that are unendorsed.

14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?
75%, but it would be difficult for someone to come up with the right items to entice me out of the other 25%!

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?
19th century tipped-finger glove, match it with an accompanying fingerless and I'd be in collector's heaven! And yes, Jon, you'd have an outlet for a D&M 651 Gehrig if you ever find one, though I have a feeling you would never let it go!

16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?
I've never had a flea-market, garage sale or antique store "score", sad but true. The closest I've ever come to a "find" has been buying a glove relatively inexpensively on eBay, cleaning it and discovering an endorsement or somewhat unique model number.

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?
Outside of the elusive D&M 651 Gehrig, I'd love to sidle up to a table or counter and buy a D&M G41 box or Ken Wel 632 box. Hell, I'd even pay $19.95 each if they had both!

18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?
When it comes to gloves, to me, condition equals rarity.

19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
All are important, but I love really nice patches.

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?
Hate ink on gloves, it's pretty much a deal breaker unless it's a one of a kind item.

21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
Ken Wel 632 Gehrig zipper-back followed closely by D&M G41 Ruth. After those two icons, any crescent (fielder's glove, basemitt or catcher's mitt) best signifies the glove hobby.

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
Absolutely, the challenge is to bring in more collectors. This topic of discussion needs to be in the forefront when we gather at the National.

23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
Yes, will be at the show Wednesday through Friday.

Postby Number9 » July 3rd, 2010, 1:10 pm

1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?

10

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?

I've focused mainly on pre 1920's but I've dabbled all over the map.

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
Anything well made. A glove that wasn't made to last doesn't stay in my collection very long.

Nope.

Condition. I have to be able to put my hand in it.

19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
Overly oiled gummy leather.

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?

Fingerless, Webless, Crescents, or the zipper back Gehrig

More bodies. I'm doing all I can to help equip vintage players with proper gloves. Hopefully some of those people join in on the collecting aspect.

Why, yes! Booth 2274 near the autograph pavilion. Stop on by and say hi to Brett, John Graham, JD, Jerry, and yours truly. Let's play catch in the aisle!

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
Bringing new collectors in. Avoiding the thinking that a glove is not worth collecting unless it's NM.
23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
No, too far for me to go. Hope to go next year when it's in Chicago.

Re: 2010 Glove Census

Postby ebbets55 » July 3rd, 2010, 6:05 pm

1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?

Since 1994.

2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?

Down to about 750 and continuing south. Woo hoo!

3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?

Just shy of 1,200.

4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?

454 gloves in the big Mike deal. It was late, we both weren’t thinking clearly... There was a subsequent deal with 73 gloves.

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?

About 80%. I only collect vintage gloves and baseball equipment.

6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?

Nope, just boxes. Can't afford to collect anything else.

7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?

Just vintage baseball equipment.

8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?

Mostly trades with other collectors.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?

Love the 19th Century and pre-1920 stuff the best.

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?

Yes, A.J. Reach is by far my favorite.

11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?

Absolutely, I have lots of subsets like off-brands and Babe Ruth gloves, pre-war 3 and 1” webs all in off-brands as well as all the different Doak and Nokona models.

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?

Hmmm. Rube Waddell or Rube Marquard. Would also like to find the second Harry Hooper glove.

13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?

Don’t have just one.

14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?

Up to about 90%.

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?

Babe Ruth Horace Partridge or Stall & Dean Pre-War 3.

16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?

Best find was my JC Higgins Lou Gehrig at a flea market and the best deal was the big dog with Mike.

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?

Fingerless or finger tipped.

18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?

Rarity. Would rather have one first then try to upgrade it later, which oftentimes will never happen. Don't ever pass on a rare glove because of condition. You may never, ever, ever be able to upgrade it. I laugh when people think a truly rare glove is just around the corner. "I'll wait for the next one."

19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?

Ink.

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?

They are very, very bad feelings that I won’t elaborate on. Total dealbreaker for me. The hypocricy is that I wrote my name on my glove as a kid and my dad did too. I’d like to kick my own ass, then his.

21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?

D&M Babe Ruth G41 first and Ken Wel Lou Gehrig Zipper Back second. Nice pull on the Riddle glove Fred. Everyone needs one.

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?

A seemingly never ending supply of gloves.

23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?

Absolutely. Will be there Wednesday through Friday. Looking forward to seeing you guys again.

Hi Guys,
) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
17 plus years

2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?

110 ish baseball and 40 ish softball vintage gloves

3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?

what I currently have. around 150 ish.

4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?

maybe about 12 to 15 for my one. LOL Ask Rob Mucha about that trade. He can likely tell you exact count. :D

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
97 plus %

6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?

not really into the boxes but love to see them and check out the old catalogs. Just don't own them.

7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?

I have a couple of old baseball, a few old timer softballs and an old 53 bowman color Musial card.

8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?

trades with you guys and ebay.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
My collecting ends prior to the mid 1950's. I can not seem to get into newer gloves. Though they can be cool too.

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?

I like Goldsmith gloves and the old Cool D and M gloves. Ah they are all neat in there own way, even the off brand gloves.

11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?

I like the variations of glove webs and try to get one of each. No duplicates in glove webs or glove styles. :)

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?

Not sure as I am not into endorsements as much as some folks. Although, I have some cool HOF endorsed gloves in the collection

13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?

The Rainey trap web gloves are very cool.

14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?

Being I have most of them found it my glove book, it gets tougher to let go of any of those. I suppose if the right glove came along, well I might have to loosen my grip on one a bit. Being I have only two or through dup gloves, I am pretty much sitting tight with what I now have.

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?

Any web style that is funky enough that I don't have one. LOL I also love the old vintage softball gloves with the cool raised pads that have different color leather than the glove itself.

16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?

paid 50 cents for a workman glove and a full sewn web. Yeh, 25 cents apiece. I got very lucky. :)

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?

fingerless glove
18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?

rarity, but condition is a nice plus.
19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?

Ink is bad!!!!!!!

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?

Don't like it at all but if I had to choose I would prefer it be on the back of the glove

21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?

The Ruth G-41

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?

To get new people into the hobby. I have tried to bring more into the glove fold with a couple of the glove books I have written. I have a 3rd book that will come to the surface within a few months. Hopefully it will bring in a wider audience to our hobby.

23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?

I wish I could, but I am not going to be able to. I would love to meet some of you in person and talk gloves.
With apologies to JD, I’d like to expand on the questions asked in the “Collector’s Corner” section of his website. This should be a fun exercise, shed some light on the pulse of the glove collecting hobby and make for interesting reading.

This is a tough one. I cant come up with a particular player.

No patch

With apologies to JD, I’d like to expand on the questions asked in the “Collector’s Corner” section of his website. This should be a fun exercise, shed some light on the pulse of the glove collecting hobby and make for interesting reading.

1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
Just over a year
2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?
About 60
3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?
About 60
4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?
I bought 3 on Ebay from JD
5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
I'll say 85%
6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?
Would love to have boxes or catalogs, but too pricey. I clip ads from old magazines when I can find them.
7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?
Store model bats in any condition, a few baseballs
8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?
Mostly Ebay (although I'm trying to break the habit). Antique stores, flea markets.
I'd probably do better spending my money with members of this forum.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
Mid 1950's and earlier, with a few exceptions.
10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
No. I like variety.
11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?
Not really. I do have a signed 1958 Yankee ball I got as a child. So far I've got Mantle, Slaughter, Larsen & Throneberry gloves,
to match signatures on the ball. I'm not pursuing it vigorously, but eventually I'll build on it.

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?
Roy Hobbs? I really don't have an answer for this one.
13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?
Ken-Wel zipper back Gerhig.
14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?
I need to think about this. I've made a lot of rookie mistakes, focusing on quantity rather than quality..
If I were to "thin the herd" right now, I'd say 50% are keepers. As my collection matures, that number will go up.

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?
Ken-Wel Dazzy Vance. I had one and let it get away.
16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?
My first two gloves: Davega Red Ruffing and Ken-Wel Dazzy Vance. $5 each at estate sale. This was years ago, before I
caught the glove collecting bug. I sold the Vance (kick -me) on Ebay a few years back.

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?
An early Babe Ruth endorsed glove.
18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?
I think rarity trumps condition.
19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
Import gloves. Hate 'em.
20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?
I don't mind it except if it's done in excess (Every finger, thumb, wriststrap! Whatsa matter kid? You can't remember your name?)
21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
I think Babe Ruth symbolizes not just the hobby, but the sport itself. So G41 Ruth glove.
22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
Getting the thousand or so members of this forum to post more. I see the same names over and over. Where are the other guys?
23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
I really want to, even if it's just a day trip. Hope to see you there.

It's O.K. to a certain degree
21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
The G41 Ruth
22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?

Re: 2010 Glove Census

Postby GloveCrazy » July 8th, 2010, 11:16 pm

1 ) How long have you collected vintage gloves?
Since 1992, but seriously hooked in 1995

2 ) How many vintage gloves do you currently own?
I really don't know. My inventory is in disarray but probably 850 (and Jim D would probably say 950)

3 ) What’s the largest number of gloves you’ve ever owned at one time?
Current, and I'm amazed I still have so many needs.

4 ) How many gloves were involved in your biggest deal (purchase, sale or trade)?
Probably 15 or so, but had some real valuable trades of much smaller numbers. Love trading!

5 ) Gloves constitute what percentage of your memorabilia collection?
95%

6 ) Do you collect glove related ephemera like boxes, catalogs, advertisements, etc.?
I like wooden signs a lot, boxes a little

7 ) What other types of memorabilia do you collect?
Figural trophies, football helmets, and large baseball team pictures (non pro)

8 ) What is your primary source for acquiring gloves (eBay, auction houses, private sales, trades)?
I love trading, like flea markets, but get most from ebay these days (unfortunately). I just don't get the same kick out of auctions.

9 ) Do you tend to collect gloves of a particular era? Which era?
I like USA gloves of all eras, but light up more for crescents and webbed gloves

10 ) Do you gravitate toward a particular manufacturer? Which one?
Stall & Dean baby, but I also like Ken-Wels and Rawlings. I go after anything that looks quality, though.

11 ) Do you strive to complete glove “sets” (i.e. certain teams, HoF endorsements, etc.)?
A little, but not really (though certainly appreciate it and like helping others). I do have runs of Ruths, Doaks, Vances, Riddles, trapeze and 3-fingers but it's more of a passive interest.

12 ) What player, whose name never appeared on a glove, do you wish had an endorsed model?
I honestly don't know who hasn't appreared or is truly very rare but I get a kick out of the Moonlight Graham short career guys and weird nicknames. Anyone got a Dean Stall glove?

13 ) What is your favorite glove in the hobby?
Of my gloves I like my black fielders mitt, webless gloves, and crescent fielders. Generically, G41 Ruth, buckleback Vance, Stall & Dean Speed, Lutzke-types, full webs, 1" webs, tall fat 40s (Doak, Riddle, Cross), 60s trapeze, ... that's how come I can't stop buying!

14 ) What percentage of your collection are “keepers”, untouchable for sale or trade?
I consider all tradeable or sellable in the right deal (and have traded some out of the top 30). Realistically 300 or so will never go anywhere

15 ) What’s on the top of your want list?
Fingerless, finger tipped workmans, or upgrade buckleweb crescent at the right price

16 ) What was your best glove find or deal?
The one that comes to mind is a softy Nokona Chalie Engle Lutzke-type 3-finger for $30 at an antique store that three local collectors frequented often (even though we NEVER find anything at any antique store around here). It was in a bucket with a bunch of crappy gloves. Picked it up and walked straight to the cashier, no Passing Go, no $200. Put in in my trunk immediately before checking out the other half of the store. Had to part with that one in a large trade for my first webless (see 14), and now Jim owns it. Although it is a hugely rare model I did win a twin (nearly identical) on ebay several years back and have never seen another. Let's just say, I paid a heck of a lot more for the second one but it helped ease my pain.

17 ) If you could find a $19.95 price tag on a glove in an antique store, which glove do you wish it would be?
Fingerless, finger tipped workmans, or upgrade buckleweb crescent, but in my area I'd more likely find a lefty import with ink all over it.

18 ) What is more important to you, rarity or condition?
Condition, no question, but I'm not a big mint/unused guy. Just give me the top quality softies with smooth linings all day long!

19 ) What’s your most important glove pet peeve (i.e. nice patch, smooth lining, deep stampings, etc.)?
Smooth linings, but I generally don't end up keeping inked, cracked, or seam opening gloves very long (unless horribly Frankensteined)

20 ) What are your feelings about ink on gloves?
HATE it on front, bothersome on back, unless fountain pen on an oldie

21 ) In your opinion, what model is the “face of the hobby”?
G41 Ruth -- this glove has it all: enormously popular player, huge white 1" web with tan trim, huge label of a top brand, and lots of old ads. Similalry the Gehrig zipper but I give the nod to the Ruth because it is more obtainable, white, and a fielders glove. Honorable mention to Dazzy and Doak.

22 ) What is the glove hobby’s biggest challenge?
New blood, and it starts with us. Time to enlist local newbies.

23 ) Are you going to the National in Baltimore?
Maybe. I have the time off but no cheap flight yet. Would LOVE to.
