Help with dating some Vintage gloves

Postby kjjavic » January 23rd, 2010, 11:44 pm

Hello guys. My dad recently picked up a 4 vintage gloves, and since I am more of a football collector and don't know much about gloves (although I read this forum frequently and am learning alot as I go), he asked me to post to see if I could get some info on them. I was hoping I could get some help dating them, id'ing them as far as what type of glove they are (I am not familiar with glove nomenclature), and lastly if possible give me a sense of value so that I could pass that along to him.

The first glove is a Spalding glove. It has a red and yellow cloth label, and appears to be a white leather. This glove and the next Victor glove were picked up with a large group of sports items from Ursinus college in PA that dated from around 1905 to 1910 and the group included a great Morrills noseguard.

The next glove is a Victor glove. This glove has a Victor button, and has some major condition issues, including a period sewn repair in the palm.

The third glove is a Reach glove. I don't really know how to describe this glove as far the type of glove.

The fourth glove is the best condition glove of the lot. It is another Reach glove, and has a cloth Reach tag, and a very clean Red and gold button. The palm has Reach 59 marked on it, with a Reach logo, and a patent date of 1908. The glove also has a nice red leather piping.

Thanks again guys for any info you can provide (sorry for all the pics),

Hi Kieth.

All of your gloves date to roughly the 19teens/early 20's. None are rare but all of them, save for the kids mitt, have collectible interest for different reasons.

The Spalding Full Web is probably the most well made of the group. Prices are all over the place right now. An ebay range of between $150-350 would seem about right to me.

The Victor Full Web would probably land around $200-250. Victor is a popular brand for collectors. Unfortunately, yours only has the Victor markings on the button. If it had a palm stamp it would be a huge plus. Condition is a major factor with this glove. If it's nicer than the photo shows, it would go higher. The wool lining looks decent for an early glove, despite the hole.

The Reach mitt is a kids model. Worth about $25 or so.

The Reach one inch web is probably a mid line glove, nice condition though. $200-250 would be about right. The strong markings would be the feature that carries this glove. FYI, the red cloth edging around the wrist strap is piping. The red leather between the seams is known as welting.

I concur for the most part. I don't think the Victor would bring more than 100 to 150 (probably even less) in the condition that it's in, plus the fact that it's a lower level glove. It may date a little earlier than the teens.

Prices seem to be all over the board lately for sewn web gloves - some go really cheap, some for more than I would estimate. I think most are selling on the low side right now.
