Hello Again

Postby wareagle34 » January 8th, 2010, 11:35 pm

Hi guys, it's been a longtime since I posted anything on the forum, I guess it is because I have turned into one of those members who just likes to read all the info and enjoys reading the good banter among friends. I really don't collect gloves anymore, but that doesn't mean the love for the leather has left my heart; once a glover always a glover. I still have several gloves that are prominently on display in my home, and as long as my lungs still function they always will. Years ago when I first started collecting and received Joe's newsletter, I always liked the issues when he would print a fiction glove story that someone had created. I always wanted to read a good story about a special glove that someone had made up, and hoped that someday someone would. Sadly the newsletter has stopped for now, and the new collectors will never feel the excitement of seeing that folded paper with the round seal and the little brown box with what was inside the issue.
In 2008 my daughter was about to turn thirteen, and I wanted to give her something special. I decided to write a story that would impart all my fatherly wisdom and hope that if she read the words thru a fictious character they would have more meaning and would be easier to remember. I chose to write about the things I know and love so I combined my love for my daughter and family with baseball, Rickwood Field and of course baseball gloves. When I finished, the result was something more than I had anticipated creating. I realized here was the glove story that I had always wanted to read. I sent it to Joe Phillips and Jim Daniel to get their opinion, and was very pleased when they gave me their critique. The name of the book is "Angels at Rickwood" and I think you will find it a story you will enjoy and will want your children to read also, or you may want to read to them. Anyway I thought you guys would like to know it's out there if you are interested. If you would like more information on the book please visit my website at: http://www.angelsatrickwood.com

Thanks,
Chuck Stewart

I read Chuck's Book "Angels at Rickwood" with my nine year old son Parker. We loved it. It is obvious this was written by a loving father, a true baseball fan and a baseball glove collector. It's a nice story that weaves baseball into the life lessons he's trying to impart on his daughter through the characters in the book using Rickwood Field as the backdrop. I even thought of someone we all know and love in one of the characters. In one part he describes a glove and the description nearly brought tears to my eyes. It's one of my favorite gloves. Did you ever wonder if a glove could tell a story? Chuck tells one for us. I think it helped my boy notice how special gloves are to me. It allowed us to step back a few times and talk about a lot of other things a father and son who love baseball should talk about. I recommend this book to any parent who wants to spend quality time reading with their kids and I believe it will mean just a little bit more to a glove collector.

If you like baseball and want a little glove stuff to read about too please get Mr. Stewart's fun tome. It's a delight to read and a good for your kid(s) too. Written from the heart!
Chuck and I go pretty far back and he's a key cog in the Birmingham chapter of Glovers!
