Say Hey!

I'm a little surprised about the price this Willie Mays MacGregor personal model received on eBay at $255.

Not because I'm not a big admirer of Mays' ability as a great all-around ballplayer and super defensive star, but, as we all know, he simply didn't have the "charisma" and appeal of his arch rival, Mickey Mantle. Still, this is an awfully substantial, and fair price for his personal model glove, I think.
Couple of months ago I picked up an Ex/Nr. Mint Blue Leather MacGregor Willie Mays glove that was aesthetically attractive with silver stamping, etc. and it sold for an excellent price for me on eBay, doing better than I expected, since it was more of a youth model. Good for Willie.

Good Point!

You're probably "right on" on that point. I remember seeing my first "Spider Web" on a Jackie Jensen MacGregor. Unusual features on gloves really help.

I bet a lot of Mac Goldsmith and MacGregor endorser pitcher/outfielders were using that big ol' hunka leather! You bet! I love mine, but not a
spider web.

I THINK THE MAYS GLOVE WOULD HAVE BROUGH MORE MONEY IF THE SELLER DIDN'T MENTION THE WATER MARKS...

I won it and was pretty committed. USA Mays gloves run a pretty wide spectrum of size and quality, and there is some debate about which is his best. Some prefer the "black crown" label personals (such as the GC12). At the risk of never being able to win one again, I prefer the G101 or G105. They are older and rivals the top-of-the line Rawlings models (MC, BD, MM, MMP, etc), and the spider webs seem to be MacGregor's competitor to the Rawlings anchored web.

Some -- like me -- consider Mays the greatest outfielder ever with his combination of offensive and defensive skills and speed. He'd be my first pick in a sandlot game (there is a separate sandlot team post on the forum). There are several reasons why he probably isn't as popular as others, west coast bias (non Yankee), played a little too long, grumpy autographer, among other things, but when I think of catching a baseball I picture Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, and Ozzie Smith. As an Angel fan, though, I'm obliged to say that Jim Edmonds' catch was more spectacular than "the" catch.

Mays glove

Postby joey » December 9th, 2009, 6:43 pm

I was the one who had the glove up for auction......I had a little project is was doing and have been putting up some stuff to help defer the expense....It was a little hard to part with....but I am glad it found its way to a part of the glove collecting family.....as far as the water marks....I couldn't have sold it without bringing it to everyones attention who wanted to bid on it.....Hope everyone has a great Christmas....Joey

Some intelligent and thoughtful posts here on the Mays glove. I think the seller is right in describing the water marks, even though the pictures show a little. I always want to point out the negative too and it's cost me I'm sure, in some of my auctions as on my pro issue Pete Rose bat up right now.
And, on Mays, rare skills in the 5 tool category and had the dreaded comparison with Mantle of course, who WAS in New York and idolized. I will do a separate post on Mantle a little later here. Edmonds' grab was a super catch!
