So figure that a deal was made and the seller said I will add a buy now at the price they agreed on, he puts up the buy now and before the guy who the seller made the deal with someone else grabs it.

What would you do.

What would I do? As if I were the deal maker? I can't really say because I'm not the type of person to end an auction early especially with some lowball offer on Ebay. But, if someone comes along and bids on the auction and were not aware of the dealings then kudos to them for being there at the right place at the right time. Look, I’m all for deals and people getting a bargain here and there. We all get lucky sometimes and that’s one great aspect of the hobby. I just have never seen a thread in Today I Found starting out with “Check out the awesome glove I picked up by ending the auction early.” You haven’t and you never will because deep down people know it’s side-stepping our glove community. I know by posting I’m coming off as whining or bitching, but my frustration stems from enjoying watching glove auctions and choosing to report on them for this forum.

The mere fact that there has been 100+ views on this and no responses speaks volumes to me. I’m fine with people not taking a side on this. To be honest, I could care less if people side with me or not. We all have our own personal views and that is terrific and I respect everyone’s opinion and quite honestly I take them all into account which shape my own beliefs.

Murphusa, your recent commentary and added dialogue has been greatly appreciated by someone who reads this forum quite regularly. I hope you continue. I am still looking for pieces for your collection as we discussed in our pm’s.

Good day Gentlemen and for now I will enjoy the day with my family……………………………RBD

I despise the fact that people try to end auctions early. I understand why they do it, but it rubs me the wrong way. To make things right, in my own warped mind, I write the seller, like I have in this case. I tell him the truth, such as, “This guy just ripped you off for roughly $1,500 to $2,000” or “I would have easily bid well over $1,000 for the item if the auction went to fruition,” Put a monkey wrench in the underground aspect of eBay. Many things can transpire from contacting the seller, such as, he backs out of selling it to the guy who fooled him. At the very least, he learns that auctions are better than the “buy it now” format, especially if you don’t know the value of what you have.

I would give the seller some consideration if he acted nice to me. The consideration would cost him but I would give it.

I don't know if this is a growing trend, but I've noticed it happening A LOT lately. Very frustrating. Especially when you find the item re-listed by the person who pulled the wool over someone's eyes.

Here is what someone wrote to the seller of a glove I was looking at on ebay

Is this the way to go, do you become the keeper of all that is good and right

Q: Hi. How tall and wide is the glove? Is there any ink on the glove and are there any holes inside or out that don't show in pic? Thanks.
A: No ink and no holes, inside or out. Thanks for the questions!!

Q: Just a heads up, don't let anyone talk you into selling this glove for less than $500. Rixey is a fairly rare endorsement and your example is in terrific...more
A: Cool... Thanks for the information!!

First off, I didn't write that, nor do I have any interest or knowledge of what Rixey gloves go for, but I do think it's ok for someone to inform a seller. Especially when the seller has no idea what they are selling. If I, or you, were to sell off something that was inherited (for instance) it would be great to have knowledgeable collectors email me to let me know what I have, rather than trying to downplay it simply to get their hands on it.

Secondly, in an auction format, all the "don't let anyone...." emails in the world won't do the seller any good. People have to bid. It will end where it ends. Those types of emails are cautioning the seller to not take a BIN offer, and to let the auction run it's course.

The seller was not taken advantage of, like with the Mantle box, and everyone has an equal shot at acquiring the Rixey whether it sells for well under $500 or way over $500. It’s win/win for all involved (except for those trolls who regularly try to mislead unsuspected sellers). I did not notify this seller, don’t have an interest in bidding on the glove and don’t have a problem with what transpired. Actually, I commend the seller for not pulling the auction and relisting it with a new, frilly write-up.

Just because someone provided a rough value of the glove to the seller does not automatically translate into bids at that level. If you’re interested in bidding on the glove, you should be happy it didn’t mimic the Mantle box and end early. In this case, you have a legitimate shot at winning it. As an aside, outing auctions before they end sometimes translates into increased bidding activity. You never know who you’ve just alerted to the listing!

Yeah, we’re all on the same side, that’s why I don’t understand being upset about an auction that didn’t end early as opposed to one that did. Everyone has an opinion which should be respected. I respect opinions which differ form my own, as hope others would with mine. Differences make for better reading in any forum. Murph, if I’m misreading what you’re saying, perhaps it’s time to begin using emoticons! :)

not upset at all. Just putting up questions for discussion.

I do like to see auctions run their course so everyone has a chance

On the ER glove, I know what I want to spend on one and if that isn't good enough to win Oh Well

Well you can't always believe what you read. I guess it wasn't a $500.00 glove

Hahahaha... I guess it wasn't ! ! !

A relatively rare glove in really nice condition can be "stolen" if the auction runs its course! Hope you got it at that price, Murph, nice pick-up! Perhaps that $500 message scared some people away?

I didn't think it was a $500.00 glove. It looked to me like a middle or lower grade glove from the era. The light coloring will make it difficult to clean up. Taking that all into consideration, My top bid with the $15.00 postage included was $199.99. So I saved $7.50

All in all a better purchase than the white Ward glove I didn't win earlier
