"Pal" brand glove

Postby centerall49 » September 20th, 2009, 8:11 pm

I have a glove that looks like it's from the late 50s or very early 60s. The patch says "Products for Sports" in small lettering and "Pal" in large letters. The black button for the wrist strap has the word "Pal" and tiny baseball laces. The glove has "Mickey's Model" on the pinky. The heel shows "Model 393". It also has a ball player in the pocket and some other wording here and there.

Does anyone know anything about the company or brand, or the glove itself? I don't suppose it's a high quality glove from that time but the leather and workmanship seems pretty good, and it has a very nice shape and simple but functional design.

Thanks for your help.

Import Glove?

Postby softball66 » September 22nd, 2009, 4:39 pm

You might see where this glove originated from. I think I've run across some PAL gloves and they have been import models from the early 1960s. The sporting goods trade was inundated with import baseball gloves at this time.
Distributor companies could access their gloves, at first from Japan, and set up their own brand in this case "Pal". They could also get away with using player names on their gloves, though not endorsed, by putting the name in block letters and following it with words like "model," " style" or "type."
