Major League Glove pictures

My good friend David Seideman sent me some picture prints on the Cincinnati Reds players of the late 1950s and included were some great glove shots. The most notable of these was the Ed Bailey shot and I had assumed that the mitt he was using was a Rawlings HOH with his endorsement and my friend Todd looked at it a little more closely and "Nupe" wasn't an Ed Bailey signature on the mitt. I got out my trusty magnifier and-- lo and behold-- it had the name "Birdie" Tebbetts on the mitt.
Now, the mitt was a non-break mitt which was a little outdated by that time where the break had been introduced to make the mitt close faster.
And I remembered John Edwards writing to me that when he was with the Reds that Birdie, an old catcher, made him use a non break mitt to better learn how to catch and maybe, in Birdie's mind, to receive the ball better.
Jerry Lynch appears to be using a Rawlings HH. Bill Henry sports a great shot of his Wilson A2000. Harvey Haddix (Pirates) looks to be using an HSP.
We'll be running these photos in our next newsletter.

Sounds like another great issue, Joe! I really enjoy seeing pictures of the gloves that the major leaguers of the era used. Especially if it's one that they're not usually associated with, like Brooks Robinson and Wilson or Warren Spahn's Macgregor Spider-Web. Mr. HH himself with an HSP?! Can't wait to see that!
