A friend of mine is turning into a glover, slowly but surely. He's going through his old stuff and found this mitt. As you can see, I am in it for the reward (c:

Here is what he sent me (sorry his img numbers dont match links, but you get the idea:

Clint,

Here are some photos and details on the catcher’s mitt I showed you. I’ve done some research and it appears to be vintage 1940’s or 50’s since its got Sherman Lollar’s name on it: John Sherman Lollar (August 23, 1924 - September 24, 1977) was a catcher for the Cleveland Indians (1946), New York Yankees (1947-1948), St. Louis Browns (1949-1951), and the Chicago White Sox (1952-1963).

Here are the details I can make out on the grove which I’ve tried to get pictures of these:

Back of the mitt (see photo 100_1774)

Label - Rawlings St. Louis (label is in great condition see photo 100_1775 & 100_1782)

Nu- Grip Streamlined (see photo 100_1778 & 100_1783)

Pat. No. 1562.176 (see photo 100_1778 & 100_1781)

Front of the mitt (see photo 100_1776)

Rawlings (at the 12: o’clock position)

Sherman Lollar (at the 2: o’clock position, also see photo 100_1785)

Professional Model (at the 6: o’clock position, also see photo 100_1786)

I zipped the photos, but they did not appear to compress much. Let me know if you have any problems opening them and what you might can find out, if anything on its history or worth. I’ll owe you a few beers! Thanks.

Sherm gold glove

Postby softball66 » June 11th, 2008, 5:38 pm

I think Sherman Lollar was voted onto the very first gold glove team when they combined both leagues, about 1957 I think.
I've got a baseball signed by four of the original nine and should go ahead and get Mays and Malzone. Lollar, Hodges, Fox, McMillan all deceased.
